Great pic there Gary. Many happy times in those and the Kirby Cadets at RMS Condor.
Was at an annual camp at RAF Lindholme - when it was home to HP Hastings unit.

I tell you it could soar like a good un but the penertaration glide angle was about 1 in 10 on a very good day so you got nowhere fast, I can remember getting up to about 10,000' (long hot summer of 76) only had shorts and a shirt on, it was bloody freezing. And it was aerobatic, you cant beat a loop (mine where allways D shaped) in an open topped aircraft.
I must be going solo as the straps are done up and the ballast bomb is in the nose.
please note the weekly pigeon deposits
The other trainer we used is a MKIII, I will post a picture later, that had the soaring characteristics of a house brick.

IIRC they scraped all the aluminium paint off one and just doped it to finish.
Went up like a homesick angel

ATC Uniform. I assure you that battledress, replaced by the "woolly pully" uniform, was far better than the original "done up to the neck" (horrible little clips at one's throat to fasten the top of the jacket) somewhat akin to the old RFC uniorm. I am speaking of the 1950s when most of our instructors had served in WW2 and with the Royal Auxillary Air Force Squadrons still flying cadets could make themselves useful at weekend on RAF airfields to eventually be rewarded with a seat on an air test of a Tiger Moth. Many happy days "Venturing Adventure."
Much personal disappointment when after many years away from the Corps I returned as the CO of a Detached Flight to find that shooting, gliding and flying had been much reduced. The attitude of the cadets, recruitment of girls was still some time away, was much changed. Flying had become commonplace in the 1970s and of course National Service had long gone and few cadets seemed to want to join the RAF or other services, civilian or military. In fact I often wondered why the youngsters joined the ATC. We did, during a nine year period, despite lack of a permanent HQ, manage to produce 1 Gold, 2 Silver and 4 Bronze D of E cadets, two best recruits in their entries in the Royal Navy and a cadet who won the RAF Engineering prize during his service as a regular.
Today the small unit I commanded has grown into a distinguished Squadron, now with a purpose built HQ, which has just celebrated its 30th anniversary as a Squadron and is commanded by an officer whom I first met as a young teenage recruit.
I am still somewhat surprised to find that there are now (Feb 2014) more cadets and staff serving in the renamed "Air Cadets" than there are members of the present Royal Air Force.
