B-47 Stratojet

I let the B-47 out of the bag in Martin's most wanted AI thread a few days ago, so I can now say a little more about what I'm doing. Although the aircraft are done (FS9 and FSX native), I am in the process of building some retro scenery of Macdill AFB to give them a home to operate from.

There are 30 B-47E examples of the 306th BW (blue, red and yellow striped tails). Here's a few examples:

I've built two models, one with tanks and one without. Both have an opening crew door and retractable ladder. I'm also going to attempt a third with JATO bottles. The best way to achieve that I think is to create the smoke and flame with an effect file and trigger it as a light entry in the aircraft.cfg file, much as we do for an afterburner. I haven't really dabbled in effect file design before and a look at one JATO pay-ware example that Martin showed me, suggests the 4 used are quite complex. I'll see what I can do though.

I did quite a bit of research into B-47E serial numbers. The ones used are generally in the range, but there's not much information about specific squadrons that operated them. One document I found was particularly revealing, not so much in allocations, but the sheer number of aircraft that crashed, often with fatal consequences. It was a very difficult aircraft to fly apparently.

I decided on Macdill AFB (Florida) as a home for the B-47s. Although there are a couple of examples of scenery available already, they were not really suitable for retro B-47s in FS9 and are too frame rate heavy in FSX.

I have all the ground polygons and 5 tree blocks laid down. Each block is one single object, with 4 welded texture vertices in total and 1 draw call per block, so the trees are very frame rate friendly. The 30 B-47s are also operating happily, although I have still to make some waypoints to give some alternative destinations to flying circuits:

Image

I'm currently building some custom objects to place in the scenery, but I already have a lot I built for other scenery that I can utilise:

I really only decided to make the B-47 because I finally cracked the B-36 that unblocked my "B-" production line:

Now I can add the B-47 and then go the second step of a building a B-58 Hustler. That is destined to operate from a slightly updated alternative AFCAD in Brent's Carswell scenery. Once I have Macdill finished that is.

I can certainly look into the RB-47 John, including where they were based. If no scenery exists, I guess we could have a few visiting Macdill.

Official bases were Lockbourne (now Rickenbacker) and Forbes... but operational flights were flown from Thule, Fairford, Incirlik, Brize Norton, Yokota and Eielson

That would be OK Brent. Both Rickenbacker and Forbes are in FS9 (haven't checked FSX), even if I just modified the default AFCADs. Both are a reasonable flight time to/from Macdill.

B-47s and RB-47Hs/ERB-47H ( elint birds ) were also operated from Lakenheath. Who can forget the nuclear accident at the 'heath due to the B-47 crash there.

The Nuke incident has gone down in British Aviation folklore.

Another amazing job. Used to walk around one on display at Little Rock AFB, AR.

In ongoing research for my classic era (circa 1962) setup for FS9 I have collected records of about 400-500 serials for E/B-47E aircraft which were seen operating between 9 and 12 aircraft Reflex TDY detachments to Brize Norton, Fairford, Greenham Common and Upper Heyford in UK during 1963 and allocated to:

40th Bombardment Wing, Schilling AFB, Kansas,
96th Bombardment Wing, Dyess AFB, Texas
98th Bombardment Wing, Lincoln AFB, Nebraska
301st Bombardment Wing, Lockbourne AFB, Ohio
307th Bombardment Wing, Lincoln AFB, Nebraska
340th Bombardment Wing, Whiteman AFB, Missouri
376th Bombardment Wing, Lockbourne AFB, Ohio
380th Bombardment Wing, Plattsburgh AFB, New York
384th Bombardment Wing, Little Rock AFB, Arkansas
509th Bombardment Wing, Pease AFB, New Hampshire
3920CSG Brize Norton for continuity training and general duties

Bruntingthorpe, Chelveston and Mildenhall were also used in UK.

Incirlik, Turkey; Moron, Spain; and Sidi Slimane in French Morocco also hosted B-47s

Also, six serials for 55th Strategic Reconnaissance Wing, Forbes AFB, Kansas ERB/RB-47H operating from Brize Norton during 1963

Crew training in USA was undertaken by 4347th Combat Crew Training Wing (SAC), McConnell AFB, Kansas using TB-47B/B-47B aircraft but it has been difficult to identify serials.

If further details would be useful just let me know

cheers, Geoff

Thanks Geoff, but I'll stick to the 306th at Macdill and perhaps a few RB=47's, other wise I'll really get bogged down in what is probably a minority interest. I'll provide a paint kit as usual and users can create further examples and deployments as they wish.

Just finished the Macdill FS9 scenery element of my B-47 package. I could go on and on with it, but I don't want to get bogged down. It's as retro as I can make it, given that there really isn't much to go on for that period. It's all custom made so no libraries are required.

This old tower has since been demolished and replaced with a new one:

The main ramp with a variety of period vehicles, all specially made:

The weapons area with dog patrol:

The alert ramp:

4 more elements to do yet:

- Convert the scenery for FSX

- Replace the test flight plans with something a bit more interesting

- Experiment further with JATO effects

- Make the RB-47.

I hope there's enough interest to warrant the effort, but users could substitute B-52s if they wish.
