OK, I give up, how the hell do you get then to show up in FS2004.

i.e
main - WSAI_117A
light map WSAI_F117A_L doesn't show up AT ALL.

Mmmmm: "WSAI_117A" vs "WSAI_F117A_L"?
Both for gmax and FSDS3, the naming convention should be:

main - WSAI_F117A_T
light map - WSAI_F117A_L

Take into account also: when _L Alpha channel is black then the area will show after light nav are switched on.
Also _L texture could easily be: 512 x 512 DXT3 with Alpha, which gives just a tiny 257 kB size (reference: Aardvarks).

My bad, was a typo -

Texture names are -
WSAI_F117A.bmp
WSAI_F117A_L.bmp

The lightmap doesn't show up.

Visible part of the lightmap is black with the light cones on it, alpha channel is white with the lightcones in black. So they should show up with light switch on, they don't.

Wee,
yer main texture should be named:
WSAI_F117A_T.bmp

so the texture names should be -
WSAI_F117A_T.bmp
WSAI_F117A_L.bmp

You may easily change the name in FSDS3.

It should
Isn't it you went into a trouble with landing/taxi lights itself?
Do they shine at all?

Check there -

PS. You can check night shining with Abacus FS Painter somewhow also ...

The lights themselves work fine.

Problem is I need some light flares on the fuselage and intake grills.
Can't seem to make the WSAI_F117A_L file work.

One smal, tiny question:
have you ticked HasLightMap in MakeMDL ??
It is not ticked by default ...

Well I'm getting there -

Parts (landing lights) where the alpha channel is white show up.
Part (all others NAV etc) where the alpha channel is black, don't show up.

GOT IT - alpha channel must be named alpha, for some reason my paint prog was naming it colorkey - colorkey DOESN'T work.
Naming it alpha all is well and good.

Notice glow on engine intakes from anti-ice light :)

Yes Wee!
Colorkey is just ON - OFF (white/black).
"Alpha" is true 256 shades of grey. You should be carefull with setting up Alpha channel, as far as I remember one of tricks is tu put one white pixel on (0,0) position, or something like that
