A Visit to the Strategic Aerospace Museum-Nebraska

A Friend from California stopped to see me Sunday and Monday. He was enroute back to CA after a trip to New England. We spent most of the morning at the Strategic Aerospace Museum(formerly the SAC Museum).
It was an 'update' visit for me since I hadn't been there since they changed the name  We got to see Reg Ushler BG(ret) and talk some about his Mustang "Gunfighter." Reg is one of the Docents and is running a motion simulator they have installed. There are two of them and they have pretty good motion-they will roll and loop. The cockpit is very basic essentially using a single stick and throttle and limited effects. It uses a variant of FS2002 and you fly over a pretty bland terrain with tanks as targets. You can fire missiles at them. The cockpit is a semi accurate FA-18 (Curious for an Air Force Museum). But it was fun. Ric and I both thought it could benefit from a widescreen or triple monitor display. But the motion was a fun thing. A little too big to fit in my computer room :(
Many of the airplanes are being repainted or repaired. But there is a good variety. Ric had never seen the B-45 and the B-36 is the largest airplane they have on display. At some times during the year, they have crawl-thru days when they open up the airplanes. But they also have excellent displays of most of the cockpits and crew positions that you can either look in or sit in (B-52). They have added a lot on the Space Shuttle and
Space Station. I think that is due to having the First Astronaut from Nebraska current on the Space Station. All-in-all it was a great day.

Is that at KOFF? Can you see much base activity from the Museum?
Sorry I have a facination with RC's and KOFF!

Hi Barry,
The original SAC museum was just east of Offutt. If you look at a field diagram it was at the end of the closed runway. There was a major campaign to build a new museum west of Omaha. It is now there (in Ashland, NE) and has been renamed as the "Strategic Aerospace Museum"
You can see the RC/V135s and the Airborne command post flyers almost everyday. Security is not as tight as it was when SAC ran things so you can also probably get on base as a visitor. If not, give me a call and I will take you out there and we will drive around.
Gordon Perry did a great KOFF scenery set and Ray Metzler did a good AI traffic set so you can see the 135s in the sim. I took some shots to help improve Gordon's Original Scenery and it is pretty accurate now.

Hello

If i was not in Australia along way away I would be over like a shot.
I'd really love to take up your offer of a tour around KOFF and might pop over next year? If its still ok with you then.

Maybe we can have a MAIW gathering ?

have you got any pictures from ur trip to the museum

Barry

FYI I did plans for all RC/TC squadrons in FS. As soon as we have an AI RC/TC i'd love to do an MAIW package. The E4's will be in a upcoming package that I thought would be good to include then in..If u PM me your email address u can have a look at it for me if u want
Be good to get ur thoughts on it.

Hi Barry,
It is an open invitation! Just send me a PM and I will pass along the phone number and details on how we can get together. I am sure there are other MAIW members around- but I don't know names or locations.
