Latest Red Flag-Alaska Kicks Off: One of Pacific Air Force's premier training events, Red Flag-Alaska, kicked off June 9 as the first sorties roared off the ramp at Eielson Air Force Base. RF-A 08-03 is the third Red Flag in Fiscal 2008 in the state. The objective of the 10-day exercise is to replicate the first eight to 10 combat missions of an air campaign in as realistic an environment as possible. This includes the use of Eielson's 18th Aggressor Squadron, an F-16 unit that plays the role of enemy fighters, the red force, to thwart the friendly blue force's efforts. The exercise brings about 1,100 additional personnel to Eielson. Forces are also marshaled at Elmendorf Air Force Base to the south near Anchorage. In all, 103 aircraft are participating, including four B-1B bombers that flew in from Dyess AFB, Tex., 16 German Air Force Tornados, and Japanese Air Self Defense Force F-15Js. There are also Stinger missile teams taking part. Brig. Gen. Mark Graper, commander of Eielson's 354th Fighter Wing and the exercise's host, said that one of the challenges--and benefits--of RF-A is its distributed layout over the expansive state (see below). By the end of the exercise, participants will have flown about 2,500 hours in total, according to officials with Eielson's 353rd Combat Training Squadron, the exercise's caretakers.

Come Fly the Alaskan Skies: What are the biggest advantages to units coming up north to Alaska for Red Flag exercises? Put simply, the space--lots of it. In fact, 67,000 square miles to be precise, spread over two large chunks of the Last Frontier known as "The Park" to Red Flag participants, according to Capt. Ron Strobach, the battle management flight commander for the 353rd Combat Training Squadron at Eielson AFB, Alaska. To the outside world, it is known as the Pacific Alaska Range Complex. The extensive PARC training space is divided up into the "North Park" and the "South Park." North Park alone is roughly the size of the state of Kansas, containing terrain from mountains to forest to tundra, Strobach told the Daily Report, which is in Alaska observing RF-A 08-03 (see above). In comparison, the Nellis range in Nevada encompasses about 12,000 square miles, although it is a more mature facility than its Alaskan counterpart, Strobach noted. "They're complimentary environments," he said of the Alaska and Nevada complexes. The sheer space of PARC comes in handy when replicating "large force employments" of aircraft during the peak of RF-A, where between 60 and 90 aircraft can be in the airspace simultaneously in a "vul," or vulnerability period, during the morning or afternoon sorties, he said. The Alaskan complex is equipped with threat emitters and simulated targets from anti-aircraft-artillery batteries to surface-to-air missile sites that work in conjunction with the F-16 "Red Air" aggressors of Eielson's 18th Aggressor Squadron to hunt down "Blue Air" participants daily. In addition to PARC's vast airspace, RF-A also benefits from being able to utilize ramp space both at Eielson and Elmendorf Air Force Base, Strobach said. This offers the advantage of replicating a deployed environment in which Air Force assets often work with aircraft from sister services and coalition partners that operate from different locations, he said.

The Arctic Aggressors: The Daily Report got an opportunity on June 10 to get an up close look of Red Flag-Alaska, watching the F-16s of the 18th Aggressor Squadron at Eielson Air Force Base doing their best to push the skills of US and allied pilots. The 18th AGRS is almost up to full strength, with 18 of its Block 30 F-16s now at Eielson, said Maj. David Michaud, assistant director of operations for the unit. The squadron is building toward a total of 22 or 23 F-16s in place over the next year, he said. Aside from the unit's unique arctic paint scheme on some of its airplanes--in addition to the iconic blue Su-27 Flanker and lizard Flanker paint schemes--Michaud said the squadron's tactics and training vary very little from the Air Force's other two aggressor squadrons, the 64th AGRS and 65th AGRS at Nellis AFB, Nev. (The former flies F-16s, while the latter operates F-15s.) "From the 'red air' side, we are limited in our numbers in most cases," Michaud said. On most any day of RF-A, the aggressors are flying 10 red aircraft and may be augmented by another unit drafted into the aggressor role, he said. Accordingly, aggressor pilots have to use simulated "regeneration airfields" out on the ranges when engaging friendlies to keep in the fight in sufficient numbers. This means that, when "killed" in the mock aerial combat, an aggressor pilot will fly down to low altitude to a designated spot, wait a moment and then fly back up to join the fight as if a new aircraft has entered the fray. Based on the exercise, the regeneration drill will change, Michaud said. Sometimes pilots won't actually fly to a designated spot and some sorties may take longer for regeneration than others, he said.
