Are there any spare airframes around to do this? I would have thought that it would have been better to put the kit in the 767.

No. The airframes are new KC-135R models, and they have plenty of hours left, and won't use them like airline pilots do.

I'm not sure I would the word "new" to describe USAF KC-135R aircraft. At best it would be an aircraft from sometime in '64 I believe.

They should convert some of the MR2 frames, half of them don't fly anyway.
