On my way back home Monday, I stopped in Rantoul Illinois at the now closed Chanute Air Force Base. It is now a museum loaded with nastalgic aircraft and momentos from the almost 80 years the base was active.
It really was a fun visit. While most of the aircraft are in less than desirable condition it was still a thrill to see them up close and to imagine what this base was like when these aircraft were housed here.
Chanute was a maintenance training base for the Air Force so at one time or another almost every type of Air Force aircraft was there.

Wow, this brings back the memories. My first Tech school for Weather was at Chanute AFB. I was there in 1990.

Along one wall in the main building they have the timeline of the base available in text and pictures. It really was interesting to see all the changes that base had gone thru and all the dignitaries that have visited the base.
While the museum and the aircraft weren't in the best of shape it was still an interesting visit. One that I would definately recommend if you're ever in the area.
