Just playing a bit with FSDS

I was just playing a bit with FSDS, and was wondering if I should continue or not. This I made yesterday evening, and wanted to shared it with you guys.

I know it doesn't have a cockpit yet, but it doesn't have to fly yet :P

Yeah, looks like a MiG-25.

Just for the guys that cannot wait for such a model. It is available since months. Try this link:
http://www.avsim.su/files.phtml?action= ... hl=sib2217

BTW: someone should update the master model list as it is mentioned as not available yet :wink:

Actually I just checked that MIG-25 model in ACM and it is only 1 LOD, so in our book, it's not a true AI model.

It is low poly count, but no LODs so it won't be added to the list.

Then I'm gonna continue working on in :P It is a learning process, but I'm quite happy with the progress. Just installed the gear, so it can taxi down the runway and changed the fuselage a bit, still not happy about it. Anyway, I'll keep posting updates and problems I run into.

Max by all means, keep going. I can tell you from my forays into FSDS AI modeling that there are many hurdles to overcome and you will feel like quitting many times over. Don't give up. The modelers that check in here from time to time are arguably the best military AI modelers in the world and have an enormous amount of knowledge about building them, especially in FSDS.

I can also tell you that building the model in FSDS and then actually getting it to look like you want with a texture file is a whole different challenge. Whatever you do, do not wait until the model is finished to try to apply textures. It sort of has to be done as you make the model to get things to look right.

But again you have some of the best texture artists in the world here as well.

So go for it and keep us posted.

Small update, now I'm gonna sleep, hope to get some work done on the MIG tomorrow.

Don't be surprised if you get far into it...and decide to chuck the whole thing and start over. I have seen that a lot from new modelers. As you build your first model...you learn so many things that you wish you knew when you first started!

This is not my first model, I started with a Fokker 50 which didn't work out that great, then a 757 with winglets untill AIA and AIG released one, and finaly a Saab 340 which was going quite well. But now that TFS released the Saab 2000, I can imagine they are going to release the 340 as well, and I cannot compete against there quality. Sure I'm gonna learn a lot, and I really hope I can release this thing somewhere next year :P and continue to work on models especially for MAIW.

Luckaly I'm accompanied with some great modellers, FDE'ers and painters here at MAIW :D

If you've still got your source files for the Saab, we could certainly use a model for this ARGUS variant that the Swedes use. Otherwise we will be using the FSP model and our imagination in part II of the Swedeforce package.

@Mike:
Thanks for checking the model. 1-LOD-low-poly model is better than nothing :wink:

@max:
I can imagine that it must have been frustrating to come to an end with a special work and shortly before you want to release it someone else brings his one out. I have seen this many times before - not only with models but with paints or plans, too. The best thing would be to stay in the military AI fields as there are not too many modellers for such kind of AI aircrafts around and as you went East there are even less. :wink: Keep up with your work. I am sure there are many people out there that would love to have some Russian military flying in their sim without having a significant drop in frame rates :)

That was realy the point of making the Saab 340, for the AEW version. But thats just have to wait I guess. I'm first concentrating on the MIG for now, because I think it is a great learning subject. I already learned a lot, and sure gonna learn alot. Still have to figure out how to get the texture mapping right, moving some part around and making a cannopy. Oh well, keeps you off the streets :P

There's a MiG 25 from Ralf Kreibich at AvSim with 5 LOD's, file: ai_mig25.zip.
He has developed a MiG23BN too, file: ai_mig23bn.zip with 5 Lod's

Thanks for pointing those out Horst. I will post them to the master list with an " * " however because neither model has a low polygon count. They do have 5 LODs each but for example the Mig 25 is over 17,000 polygons at LOD1 ! That's the same as a user aircraft would have. There really is an art to making these with small polygon counts.

As an example, Henry T.'s C-130 model is only 2800 polys at LOD1.

Hey, Max, you see we tried everything to get you off-track. But you will also recognize that there is still a need for a true multi-LOD-low-poly AI MiG-25. :wink:

Please keep working in this model.
This hobby is begging for good AI specific Soviet models.
OK, maybe I'm the only one begging... :oops:

It's pretty funny to read this. There were two times in this post where I thought of starting on another model. Now I'm positive on completing the model, not only to pay a contribute to the AI world (MAIW :P ), but most of all to learn the art of AI modelling. I'm looking forward to the weekend, where I can figure out the texturing, canopy, etc. And offcource the GP of Japan :P

While I'm not a modeller I can say this. You will find nothing but help and encouragement at this site.

MAIW wants others to follow in it's footsteps. It can only make this hobby that much better.
