NBAI HAWK Repaint problem - RAAF Roullette colours

Hi friends,

I guess this is something for Nick Black and testing staff.

Nick asked to see his hawk in RAAF Roullette aerobatic colours so as promised I set about doing this for him.
However, I have now run into a small problem with the top wing horizontials as there texture appears to be mapped from the wing it self and not from a seperate map on the file like most if not every other paintable part.

The problem being that the white stripe on the wing is where the mapped texture is loaded from, however some of the horizontials need to be painted red, as per the rest of the wing. See photo's below.

I'm just wondering now if Nick was pulling my leg?????????? or this was just an oversight by the beta testers as there is plenty of room on the texture for it to be seperately mapped.

Hope this info helps MAIW and others doing repaints that effect the wing.

regards,

Mark

Mark,
I am going to guess know, but until an adult comes along and gives the absolute answer it might set you on the right track.

What a lot of modellers do is to have a blob of a single colour that is used for small single colour areas like that. I am guessing that the model points to a square on the model which is currently the same grey that you see, so try recolouring that.
If I am right though the chances are that all of the LE fences are going to be one colour, but try it and see what happens.

Yes unfortunately, as a modeller, you can never ever invisage every single different repaint that is going to be done to the models, and to have every single intricate part mapped seperately takes time, so what I have done on alot of my models is either link the colour of these smaller parts to the part that it is part of, or, like in this case, the strakes are linked to a small patch of colour on the paintkit, and then replicated numerous times along the wing. So I'm afraid it is something that you will have to live with. Sorry

No worries guy's.

I thought you may have been pulling my leg Nick with this one as you asked to see your hawk in these colours.

It was only repainted for Nick anyway so I doubt whether anybody else would have any interest in the repaint. It's really not that noticable anyway as a AI aircraft.

Such as life and perhaps it may have been to some value after all.

Mark I wouldn't sweat that at all, your repaint looks great.

Thanks for your kind words Mike.

The RAAF Roulettes don't use the Hawk so its more of a 'what if' repaint really.
The photos above weren't of the finished repaint, just in undercoat stage if you ask me. It looks a lot better now but unfortunitely, that paint I think will go in the trash but all is not lost as I now have an excellent paintkit that gives the alusion of 3D parts and panels.

The repaint below is how I got around the problem, I might send a photo off RAAF Pearce.

Holy sh$% that looks farkin' awesome!
I really, really, really wish the RAAF would use Hawks for the Roulettes instead of PC-9s. Not that I have anything against PC-9s, but it makes sense to me for what is essentially a PR feature to impress potential members. Turboprop trainers are just not nearly as exciting to the average youngen as "jet fighters" screaming and thundering past!
[/rant]

I'd really love to have that paint when it's finished Mark, I'll pop you a PM with my email addy if ya don't mind

Oh, and a slight nitpick: I think it might look better on the wings if you angled out the white stripe to include the outer-most vertical thingy and made the vertical thingies white instead of red.

Hey Dark,

Can't be done unless I broaden the white strip a heap. This one might go in the trash bin too if it dosn't look right.

Hey Dark Morelia, does this meet your expectations. I broadened the white paint on the wings a touch more. It looks quite good now I think.
Give me a PM anytime.

I'd really love somebody to do a real freeware AI Wedgetail model in the background. This one is the Posky model and its heavy on frames with way to many texture files. I think an AIA or PAI converted model would work good.

Ahh yep, that's just how I was picturing it. I think it looks better this way than with the chunk of white taken out around the vertical thingies.

Yeah, tis a shame most modellers don't tend to make the spiky and or bulbous military versions of their models :( (or ones with surfboards on the roof lol)

Having read that I went and checked the one in the package I downloaded and it was absolutely the right size.

Are you sure you didn't install the FSX version?

Yes, My Wedgetail is also the size of a football feild. Something gone wrong here for sure and there is no info to be found on the problem.

Is there a website to download just the model and repaint for FS9.

I don't believe that Nick released it standalone, as he had a particular passion for doing the entire Hawk fleet, and so released them in packs.
In fact there are only two nations not done as yet, and I for one would like to get them done for completeness.

I checked it and had the same problem.
I don't know if this is the ultimate solution, or whether there is something missing by doing this but if you look in the model folder you will see 2 mdls there. Rename the AI_Wedgetail.mdl to something safe and rename the AI_Wedgetail.MDL.orig to AI_Wedgetail.mdl .

This fixed the issue for me.

OK guy's and gals, the hwk repaints are now available on Avsim. I forgot to write down the zip files names so do a search for RAAF or NBAI Hawk and they should appear.
