FSX Packages

Hi All

I am about to start downloading some packages for my FSX version. I know I have a little work to do but would love to know if there will be any packages for FSX without the work. This would really make the sim look and feel better.

Extremely doubtful. Ninety percent of us don't even own FSX.

There are no plans to produce the packages for FSX. Biggest reason is the extra amount of work this would place on us to make sure the packages work in both platforms and the fact that 95% of the contributors and testers at MAIW do not run FSX on their machines. So we really don't have a reliable way to test the packages in FSX to make sure that they work or be able to offer support.

If someone from the community were to step forward and be willing to covert each and every package to FSX format AND thoroughly test each package in FSX, AND make sure that this process gets completed in a timely manner so that we could release both formats at the same time AND then be willing and available to offer support after each release........then we MIGHT consider it.

But to be honest, we have our hands full these days just getting the FS9 versions out the door.

Thanks for the info. I realise it must be a huge task. So I might just re-install FS9 and enjoy. It has been bothering me for ages because of the lack of support. I think it would have been better if microsoft had just tweaked the new sim with original file structure and that would have been great for everyone.

Personally I have no interest in making the transition to FSX until I have $2-3K available for a machine that can make FSX sing and dance. However, it would seem reasonable to me that those of you who have made the transition should begin to network together and see if you have enough persons with the interest and energy to form a group to accomplish what Mike referred to above.

It would be a tremendous boon to the community to do so, but you gotta start talking about it get the ball rolling. Would it take the same amount of effort to port an already completed package vs creating from scratch? Does an FSX package have to be released at the same time as FS9? (There is such a hugh body of work to be converted already, that I can't see catching up ever, short of terminating FS9 development anyway.) Just remember, that the port will have to live up to MAIW standards.

ALL MAIW packages work in FSX. You may have to do a bit of work yourself to get them installed (see the other threads in this subject) and such installations aren't officially supported by MAIW. But they most certainly do work in FSX and there is plenty of unofficial support on that subject here in the forums.

Ron...Mike was talking a little tongue-in-cheek...we're not going to be in that business for a long time....we simply don't have the resources to oversee something like that.

I understand, and as long as it will be a long time before I make the transition, not a rub for me.

However, I still think those who have made the transition should at least start the talking, as I figure it will take considerable organizing and planning to get there. They will have to figure out how to obtain the resources etc. They (FSX users) will have to shoulder this on their own, as I - and I hope they - as MAIW(FS9) is nearly streatched to the breaking point already!

I have sooo many ideas to expand the life of this hobby in support of FS9 etc, just don't have the talent/skill/knowledge/time myself to accomplish this. For example, I've been looking at video podcasting as a method of both expanding the user base, and training new talent to paint, build models and scenery, flightplan and so on. The power to reach a new and much wider user base is almost beyond comprehension.

There is a new audio podcast that recently started up at www.fsbreak.net, which somewhat mirrors the efforts by those two Doctors back in the FS 2K2 days, that were posted on Avsim or Flightsim - can't remember - and is geared towards general FS news topics etc.

I'm more interested in seeing focused content that is of importance to our corner of the hobby. For whomever could put this together, there is the potential to raise capital through advertizing to offset the cost of equipment etc, altho I don't see making a living at this, so would have to be a labor of love. For a non-FS example pop over to revision3.com and check out Tekzilla, Hak5, Scam School and Systm (these are actual fulltime, profitable professional examples, but of the flavor that I'm talking about). Now, imagine the same kind of thing, only (totally dreaming here) Nick, Kevin and Resik etc teaching tips/tricks and full episodic releases of full builds of models. Or Graham King et al on painting ala the same websites Pixel Perfect program. How about a roundtable discussion (using Skype) of Magic Mike etc on topics such as airfiles etc. If only there were enough people with enough time.

Well, one can dream can't he?
