Black Hawk operations reach milestone

The Sikorsky Aircraft Corp. says its Black Hawk helicopters flown by the U.S. Army in Iraq and Afghanistan have achieved an operational milestone.

Connecticut-based Sikorsky says its widely deployed Black Hawk helicopters have flown more than "900,000 flight hours without a single material failure," according to a news release.

The U.S. Army has deployed more than 300 of Sikorsky's Black Hawk helicopters in Iraq and Afghanistan supporting ongoing combat operations.

Sikorsky officials say the operational achievement is expected to continue to grow to more than 1 million flight hours by the fall of 2009.

"This is the ultimate testament to the durability, reliability and effectiveness of the Black Hawk helicopter - to support and protect our soldiers in such withering and hostile environments, and to keep performing mission after mission and without any material failures," Scott Starrett, Sikorsky Military Systems president, said in a statement.
