Recently (yesterday) my Athlon x2 Dual-Core 4800+ burned up. I'm now trying to decide which motherboard and processor to buy. Which ones do you use? Athlon, Intel……..?

I’ve been looking at the AMD Athlon X2 Dual-Core 7750. At 2.8GHz and for around $70 dollars, it looks like the best deal. But I just thought I would post here and see what you all have to say. I would also like a motherboard that is SLI compatible, any suggestions (should have a AM2+ socket for the AMD)

P.S. I know I can go to NewEgg.com and read review after review on products, but I just wanted to know what you all would recommended.

I have an AMD phenom 9500 quad core and have had no problems with it, but I have been an AMD fan for a long time now.

I have a friend who has worked for both Intel and AMD as a computer engineer...he says Intel all the way for quad core processors.

If Big Blue goes with Intel, I say Intel. Intel has been working on exotic stuff for a long time. Try to get get Intel motherboards and CPU's. They where supposed to be working on super conducting circuit board powder traces way back. I would gamble on Intel alien tech.

Don't get me wrong all you AMD supporters. AMD has serverd me well over the decades, but there is something different I can't put my finger on with the Intel chips.

This is a great ? for balance and budget upgrading. I'll sum it up 1st Intel is a expensive upgrade with both Cpu and Motherboard. Ive seen some combos of intel that run begining around 450.00 that are considered medium FSX. Now For the same price AMD blows intel with there Phenom series. As to the Amd 7750 I have it in my primary FSX computer and it zings FSX, but be warned you need to buy that cpu a better Fan/Sink as the one it comes with is chet and will melt down. Best recomend I have is get the AMD 7750 and buy a Artic 64 Freezer Pro, its about 30.00. Now as to why i hate Intel, its simple Intel and me are like greese and water. I also like AMD because of its lifespan compared to Intel. On average AMD's under FS will live 1 to 2 years longer then Intel.

So really if you cant grab a intel combo at its current price, dont threat AMD is ok and a better buy at the time. There is no shame in using AMD's. There is always going to be the back and forth competition between the two big CPU's, Its what you can afford and works for you that counts.

Which ever you go with it's always a good idea to upgrade your power supply, if your looking at prices on the avg. AMD is running about 30% cheaper then Intel. When I bought my new system the first thing I did was throw out the stock power supply and went with a coolmaster 850 and after the rebate from coolmaster it cost me 10.00 (couldnt beat that with a stick)

Well said Sir. If that is your experiance between the two CPU's currently, that's good to know. If it isn't going to last, what's the point.

Remember, I'm commenting on past experience. So if quaility has changed over the years, then thats the way the ball bounces.

Please don't think I'm knocking AMD. In fact my first bridge system I constructed was a AMD 233. It was so strange. The motherboard wasn't normal. Nothing about it was normal. Somehow the combination of the parts I put together, gave it the ablily to run software that the specs said that it needed to run, ran. My specs didn't even come close. So I'm still scratching my head on that one.

Hello N35W, If I sounded like a spokesperson for AMD I'am sorry. I have had good luck with AMD and with Intel but over the past few years I have been using AMD and had no problems. I think we are getting away from the origonal post, yes sometimes cpu's burn out and there are alot of things taht cause this, to much heat, spike, or many other things. If you like AMD use it and if you like Intel use it, if you ask 50 people what they like you will get 50 different answers.

Highest performance - Intel, at a price!

AMD Phenom II + decent mobo + DDR2 (no need expensive DDR3), and what you save on getting an Intel system = buy a top end graphics card.

Scottr5213, That's very good advice about the power supplies.
Nothing will kill electronics quicker than a unpredictable powersupply.
Electronics can be very sensitive and it doesn't take much to make them crazy.
A top quality well regulated power supply will avoid unexpected incidents.

Scratch what I said before about Intel having super conductive mother boards, I was spacing. That was IBM. I don't even know if they make PC gear anymore.
