Does anyone know of some good examples of shiny metallic engine textures for the Aardvark 737-200?

Please let me know where I can find them.

Even better, can you create them?

Cheers!

What part of the engine?

It can be done using a paint program and DXTBmp.

I've seen many photos of 737-200s with polished (JT-8D?) engines. That is, the entire engine is polished.

While I can make amateur use of adobe photoshop, I have seen that others are capable of highly detailed and realistic looking polished metallic engine surfaces on various AIA 732 repaints. My skills are not advanced enough to do justice on the curved surface shading. I would like to add such textures to my own repaint (with permission, of course). Hence my question: Who has done, or can do, the best job?

That effect can be done with a little work.
Adding a bit of shading to the texture can get you close.

Dan, attached is a quick texture showing how to make a reflective texture. You must view this using the reflective model, if you use the non reflective model then the parts start to disappear, which is what I did for the French Mirage 2000 package, it depends on how the model maker set up the model, something you cannot change.

On this paint I have only made the cowlings shiny, the Nose Cowl Lip and Thrust Reversers use the original texture. To do this properly you would need to extend the reflective bit to include these parts.

The secret is in the alpha channel, any part of the alpha channel that is not white becomes reflective. The darker the grey the more reflective the part becomes, something you will have to experiment with. On the normal texture I normaly use the same shade of grey but again you can experiment with this as well.

Having made the cowlings reflective this affects all parts of it but some parts you do not want reflective. If you look closely at the alpha channel you will see I have then added white to the parts where the decals are as I do not want them to be reflective. If I was doing this properly I would also use white to make non reflective some of the details and the panel lines.

I am not sure if this is what you were asking for but I hope this helps.

While of limited use to me now (it's an old-ish post), it will be of great use to many new painters trying to create polished metallic effects for the first time.

Many thanks, I will take a look at your file and no doubt learn something new

Well, I promised these before my last computer got fried, but I managed to find them on a dvd I had laying around. It's a .psd file with just the engine metal for the AIA B732. It's for the entire engine, including reverser buckets and intake lip, and it doesn't have any weathering on it (that's up to you), so you'll have to adjust it to suit your needs.
