Hey guys, I've got a completely random question, I just saw the first episode of the new HBO miniseries "The Pacific" which is a must watch by the way, Chesty Puller is depicted briefly in the first episode and I was just doing some web research on him, evidently among many other citations and awards, he was awarded a couple Air Medals? as far as I know he wasn't an aviator, does anyone know how we would've gotten these?

I'm going with this, although I know of only rated and non-rated crewmembers:

Award of the Air Medal is primarily intended to recognize those personnel who are on current crew member or non-crew member flying status which requires them to participate in aerial flight on a regular and frequent basis in the performance of their primary duties. However, it may also be awarded to certain other individuals whose combat duties require regular and frequent flying in other than a passenger status, or individuals who perform a particularly noteworthy act while performing the function of a crew member but who are not on flying status. These individuals must make a discernible contribution to the operational land combat mission or to the mission of the aircraft in flight.

He may have gotten those when he was the Asst Div Commander of the 1st Marine Div in Korea, after making Brigadier General?

Early in his career he did try for flight training, but was washed out.

Chesty Puller is the ultimate Marine Corps hero. He was awarded a number of Navy Crosses in WWII and Korea. He was a regimental commander during the assault on Peleliu in WWII and at the Chosin Resevoir in Korea. His son was also in the Marine Corps.

In boot camp we sang a little running cadence song that includes the line "if it's good enough for Chesty it's good enough for me ...". Means if Chesty could put up with all the hardships then we can too.
