North Korea has been bombing the Yeonpyeong island, belonging to South Korea and close to the border between the countries, report military sources. The artillery has hit some houses. "Four soldiers wounded, tenth of houses in flames or collapsed". South Korean fighters in flight over Seoul.
Witnesses say the attack is yet to finish.
The SK Govt. met in a bunker and President Lee Myung-bak said he is trying to avoid this episode progressing into a conflict, but if this will go on the response will be strong.

I think this will come to a head sooner than later. N. Korea keeps fanning the flames.

It can only be expected as they have been at war since the fiftees and yet to declare a ceasefire.

Both parties agreed on a ceasefire in July 1953 if I remember correctly. It's a peace treaty that never got signed.

Could very well have done, i am almost certain that they've been at war since the start of the Korean war.

No I don't think this is the end of the ceasefire. There have been numerous firing incidents since 1953. So far this one is the largest I think.

But I don't think this will evolve in a full-blown war. The US (main partner of the South) don't need another one with Iraq and Afghanistan still going on and China (main partner of the North) can miss a war that close to its borders. Plus China might lose influence in Korea and see a unified Korea become economically stronger under US influence.

I believe that both sides will do their very best to keep this conflict contained.

Only China can keep this conflict contained but yet it allows the NK to annoy the U.S. when it needs to divert attention away from other matters. The U.S. may well be the worlds strongest super power weapons wise but it will not enter a full blown conflict with China over Korea. The stakes are way too high to imagine.

The nuclear-powered USS George Washington, which carries 75 warplanes and has a crew of over 6,000, left Yokosuka US Naval Base south of Tokyo early on November 24. Bound for exercises in the Yellow Sea with SK.

Don't think this will cool things off.
