FSDS tutorials

Mike

Been around aviation for 22 years in my past life. Just looking at simulators, virtual worlds like the airlines and atc and looking at getting active in community but still looking around as to where to enter, modeling, panels, gauges, scenery, etc etc.

On my search to find which program is better to use gmax or fsds, I found your tutorials on fsds and I think they are great. I have gone through all of them posted and I now have this hangar sitting there with 4 doors open waiting to be textured. When are you going to be releasing the next video in the series or did I miss something? I am new here and been poking around but I might have missed the post.

Again great job.

Jerry

Jerry, first off, let me be the first to welcome you to our site, I think you'll find it quite useful.

As far as the tutorials go, after going through some trying times in my personal life the last six months, I am happy to report that things are much better now and I am ready to get back to making the tutorials. In fact, I started making the next series last weekend but wasn't happy with results so I need to redo them.

It usually takes me about three attempts to get each tutorial to the point where I think it will be useful. I usually end up remembering stuff right in the middle of the recording that I wanted to cover so I have to start over and keep repeating that process until I get it right.

So fear not, they are still alive and well. This next set of videos will cover working with materials and textures. I might get one or two done this weekend, we'll see.

Glad you are able to make use of the videos. :smt023

BTW, where'd you hear about the tutorials? Another site or internet search by chance?

Also let's see a picture of your hangar!

To be honest I cannot remeber exactly where I found the link. I normally start my search on google, but it is not uncommon for me to to click through sites trying to find info that might help me learn this new world. It had to be from a forum because I remember that they were talking about MAIW and I had to put 'MAIW airplane' into google to find you. Being new to the scene did not know what the MAIW stood for, I do now.

My hangar is the same as you made in the tutorial. I want to start on a trial local airport building soon. It will be interesting that is for sure. Now do you normally post the finished product here or do you show stages? Going to be a learning curve that is for sure.

When I get a tutorial finished, I forward it on to our webmaster, Greg (Tirithon) who then incorporates it into the website so that it can be viewed directly or downloaded.

I usually post an announcement on the forums that there is a new tutorial available as well as post an announcement on the front page.

I always advise going first to the main page, and then clicking on the forums link to get here, that way you will see the latest announcements as they happen.

I am playing around with the program now and have a question kind of thinking ahead. On the hangar you made, orginal box (hangar) you deleted the front poly to see inside, the bottom poly because you can not see it and the top poly, all that is understood. You then copied and pasted and inverted to make the inside walls. I understand that. Here is my question, should the copy, paste and flip been done prior to deleting the bottom poly? Yes I understand that you can not see the bottom poly, however by flipping the bottom, does that not give you a floor surface to work with? If you were able to texture the floor would this make it easier to place as it would not matter what surface is below the hangar Or is it better to texture the actual spot of placement? Or am I missing something here?

I'm about 6 months late seeing your question. The answer is yes and no. Flipping the bottom would give you an exact floor surface to work with. However, that floor surface needs to be elevated slightly off the x axis so that it shows correctly in game. If not, it will appear to blend with the underlying surface texture whether that be and apron surface or something else like grass.

Thanks Mike

I never would have thought about elevating the floor.
