It does happen every day. Not a big deal. The media should be worrying about other things.

Happened to us a couple weeks ago on final, completely the controllers fault.

In one sense its a non-story.

On the other hand, maybe extra efforts will be made to reduce the occurrence of these incidents, now that the media is giving the ATC profession such bad publicity.

Mike
There's a reason the media is all over this and the ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ stuff.
The guys and girls in the USA CANNOT continue to work the draconic shifts they work, day in day out . The situation is building to another head . Management knows controller have great pride in their jobs and WILL do anything to make it work . Which will include working severely short staffed ,sometimes eating on a position , and causing NO delays to the airlines . But working a 5 day on and 2 days off which enforced O/T on the 6th day ,continuously year in year out will wear one down eventually .Not to mention that on those 5 scheduled days you'll be training a person who'll have a " lit lighter nest to your licence ready to burn it up" So you've got a weeks vacation planned in the summer ,HHMMMMMM , great a week of with the SHMBO'd and the kiddies and then management comes along and cancells that and says "Oh we can give you a week in Novemember" . If a controller at a high density unit gets ONE week off it will take that person 3 days minimum to de-compress .
I'm sorry ,Mike, but with a sep. loss ,there is always an enquiry . That starts with immediate removal from duties of the folk involved .The crew is therefore - 2 bodies ,not including the person doing the enquiry . There then ensues a confidence check on the ATC involved (2 bodies working one position ) In the case of the C17 and C40 it wasn't a critical loss and no harm came of it .Having said .have a calm wind situation pur t a 737 3 miles behind a C17 and slightly below and I garantee that aircraft will have a bumpy ride ! Have an "ugly" critical one and the whole unit working that shift can be shook up.
Oh yes ,I forgot to mention ,because the media is all over this "non story" the pundits will do a study and will visit units to see for themselves the situation. Of course they'll visit during the quieter period of let's say 10:00 am to 11:30 watch a bunch of ATS trying to look busy with practicall nothing to do and pronounce "everything is fine ,and these people don't actually do much do they ?"
