Omega Tanker crash on take off at Pt Mugu

Post by jaguar1 »

Saw this tanker a few weeks ago at Mugu, guess I won't see it again. Glad the crew got out ok though...

WOW! They're lucky to be ok. That could have been really bad. Noticed they were using a helicopter to air drop water onto the fire. I'm sure it was loaded with fuel.

Rejected takeoff gone bad.

Omega operates two 707 tanker transports (plus a DC-10) which the RAAF regularly charters for air refuelling taskings in lieu of the delayed delivery of its own KC-30 tankers. The aircraft involved in the crash, 1977 built 707-368C N707MQ, had only recently tanked RAAF 1SQN Super Hornets during their deployment to Malaysia for Exercise Bersama Shield, departing Cairns on its return to the US on May 16.

According to the video, the aircraft was carrying about 150,000 gallons of fuel. At about 6.75 lbs/gallon, the fuel alone weighed 1,012,500 lbs. With a maximum takeoff weight of around 334,000 lbs, it's no wonder it crashed.

Gotta love the idiots in charge of our information/media.

The Trib here in Chicago said it was only carrying 150 (gallons, lbs, liters, tons, etc.?). Article did not say. Found that equally disbelieving, either way.
