F-16C out of Nellis crashes in Nevada

A USAF F-16C Fighting Falcon crashed about 17.30hrs local time near Caliente, Nevada. The current status of the pilot is unknown.

The F-16, from Nellis Air Force Base, was participating in an air-to-air combat training mission.

"At this time we are focusing our efforts on the ongoing search-and-rescue mission for the missing pilot," Brig. Gen. T.J. O'Shaughnessy, commander of the 57th Wing at Nellis Air Force Base, said at a news conference. "What we are looking for now is the parachute and the pilot."

The jet, which went down did not have live weaponry and was not equipped with an active locating device, O'Shaughnessy said. He described the exercise that preceded the crash as a "dogfight" between two aircraft.

Search-and-rescue teams identified the crash site, which was about 20 miles west of the Lincoln County community on relatively flat land owned by the Bureau of Land Management. Caliente is about 155 miles north of Las Vegas.

A board of enquiry will investigate the accident.

This crash comes on the heels of a F-16 crash in Adams County, WI., on June 7, 2011.

From NYCavation: The pilot was conducting a routine training flight with an F-16 Fighter Falcon jet aircraft from the Wisconsin Air National Guard 115th Fighter Wing over Adams County, Wisconsin, when the accident occurred at around 1:20 p.m. local time.
The unnamed pilot was able to eject safely and was recovered south of Chester, Wisconsin, around 70 miles northwest of Milwaukee. The pilot was being medically evaluated, the U.S. Air Force said. http://nycaviation.com/2011/06/f-16-pil ... -wisconsin

Still no word on the pilot which is not a good sign after 24 hours...... Apparently it went down in a very rugged and remote area, 8 miles from the nearest road and 20 miles from the nearest town.

And the RDAF F16 belly landing at Edwards a couple of days ago. I hope it isn't the one with the F35 tail art.
