RAF Leuchars is situated some 130 miles or so from the Spey and being on the North Sea coast, there don't tend to be many Grouse in the area.sr01 wrote:Heh !!!! DON'T knock it ,the area has some pretty good Salmon fishing ! I'd volunteer in a heartbeat to teach the finer art of Spey casting

One thing it does have going for it is that it's about 4 miles from the Old Course at St. Andrews - which is why there always seems to be a USAF aircraft arriving on a Friday with a "tech problem". You could always spot the aircrew - they were the ones carrying golf bags!!

Never mind, it could have been a whole lot worse. They could have closed St Athan and sent the poor buggers there!!!CelticWarrior wrote:Oh no, not another dump for poor squaddies to end up in

I spent a rather rotten time at The Ground Defence School, being taught to be a Range Officer by bloody Rock Apes.delbydoo wrote:Stewart Pearson wrote:Never mind, it could have been a whole lot worse. I've just taken voluntary redundancy to get out of there, mind you it took me 28 years to make up my mind.

Squaddies and golf! Jeez, could that area get any more depressed?
Oh yes, I forgot. They could get independence.

What really is annoying is that after all the money spent on Leuchars (as an airbase) inc. the two large HAS complex' at the East end, that the Army are not (it appears) considering making use of the base for rotor ops.

Bit late, Stewart. I'm afraid the Army have been in St Athan for over 10 years.Stewart Pearson wrote:Never mind, it could have been a whole lot worse. They could have closed St Athan and sent the poor buggers there!!!CelticWarrior wrote:Oh no, not another dump for poor squaddies to end up in

Leuchars is a nice area, just wouldn't want to be a squaddie posted there, nights out in Cupar and Methil are a bit ..... slow.
I used to go to St Athan a lot as a Space Cadet in the 70s.

All I recall was a lot of shouting a lot of running around - and that was just from the 'Apes.

Several good nights in the Sergeants Mess though, at that time it was 60 pence a pint and 50 pence a nip.
I reckon my liver was about 4 times it's usual size by the end.

Aye I suppose so. What I could never understand was how the hell they expected us "students" to conduct a live fire on a gallery range, whilst trying hard not to spew up the previous nights refreshment, due to them running us around the place like blue arsed flies.CelticWarrior wrote:Music to my earsStewart Pearson wrote:All I recall was a lot of shouting a lot of running around - and that was just from the 'Apes.![]()
Just no understanding from these regiment types!!

I'm a Scotsman. Spewing would have been a waste of drink.CelticWarrior wrote:Did Stew spew?

There was one guy who managed to hurl when transitting down to the indoor range in Barry. (this was about 8am - we'd left the bar around 4.30!!)
Bad enough that he did so in the transport, but he also managed to "hit" the Flight Sergeant instructor as well.
Man was he the most unpopular guy on the course.
