Yeah as you say Mike, a lot of CGI.

I think I preferred this one;

Was there another movie, about 10-15 years ago, with, I believe, Lawrence Fishburn in the role that Cuba Gooding Jr. is playing? Agree with Mike, does look very good, and with the costs of CGI nowadays, plus the fact the Lucas kept it in house with ILM, who, let's face it, set the precedent for aerial battle scenes, I'm not surprised that Mr. Lucas is making the most of it.

I agree with Stewart, the HBO version was pretty good, but this one looks pretty good too, guess I will be spending $50 and going to see it in the theater, if they manage to play it up here in the sticks.

The HBO movie from about 10 years back was good, that one focused a lot on them going through training and the segregation they dealt with back in the states, this one seems to focus more on them actually in combat. My only gripes so far from the trailer is that it seems George didn't really approach the warbird community who I just know would've donated their time and money into making the movie a little less CGI heavy, heck...two of the flyable remaining P-51B/C models are already painted as Red Tail schemed aircraft (Kermit Weeks P-51C is painted as Lee Archer's P-51C and the CAF Red Tail Projects P-51C), but that aside I'm just happy to see this with an actual release date, I've been waiting for this one for a few years, now its just a few months away :D

The HBO movie from a few years back was ok but not as good as it could have been. I felt that it was somewhat shallow, and didn't do much for character development. There is a very rich story here that really deserves to be thoroughly covered. I know --- there is only some much time available, and time is money etc, but this is really a big, important story and should be well served. The actors etc were just fine, but as I say, the story was pretty thin. I fear that this movie from Lucas will end up being much the same (time is money), and especially fear that the main thrust will be along the lines of addressing the racial ills of times gone by, and not give enough weight to the great accomplishment achieved in the air. But these were not just black men, but individual men, with compelling stories, emotionally deep, and while some of them were no more or less than other men, many were of exceptional character, intelligence and bravery, both inside and outside the confines of race.

In any case, I do look forward to seeing this, and am fully prepared to overlook the heavy handed CGI, and historically inaccurate minor details, such as paint schemes, inappropriate equipment etc and physics that are inherent in anything that comes out of Hollywood these days. (Not only Hollywood, have you noticed how piss poor editing has become in the written media these day - pair instead of pare and so on?)

I will probably wait until it is available on DVD and see it then, as I don't go to the movies much any more, but man has my DVD collection grown!
