NAS Key West question

Post by RKE »

Despite promising myself to stay away from ADE designing, I couldn't help noticing that NAS Key West would be loads easier given how the base layout is already in place in the stock files.

So I was wondering, does anyone know who parks where?

I suppose the tenant units all park on the western ramp, with the VFA-106 F/A18's parked closest to the hangar and the VFC-111 F-5's parking south of them?

If that's the case, then I suppose visiting units park on the eastern ramp?

Trying to start an update to my FSX version of NAS Key West and generally start here with the virtual earth pics:

Not 100% sure but do not think VFA-106 leaves a detachment down in Key West like former VF-101 did for ACM det's. I have see other pics of C-9's carring the maintenance troops load/unload on the East ramp near the tower (you'll see a KC-135).

I'm using a mixture of Bing Maps and Google Earth (though the image quality on the latter is terrible, I like the measuring tool), and at least on Bing Maps, there's a couple of F/A18's parked up by the hangar, and according to Wikipedia (Scramble doesn't appear to have anything on Key West) there's a permanent detachment from VFA-106. Although, on closer inspection, that might be F-16's

Never was good at ID'ing military aircraft

Well there's the first surprise, somehow the default layout has been stretched in places, so it looks like I'll have to rebuild most of it

FWIW . . . Back in the day, VX-1 (where I was stationed) and VF-101 had the western ramp.
Across the runway to the south the Air Force had six or eight F-102's or F-106 interceptors (for the Cuban threat).
Transients were all over east by Ops and the tower.
VX-1 had four P-3A, two P-2V, four S-2F and four SH-3A.
VF-101 had many F-4's as it was the RAG squadron for the type.

A rough first draft, in case anyone is desperate for some parking spots in the Keys. Parking spots on the eastern apron is wild mass guesswork, all I knew for sure was that there had to be space for 2 E-3's at the same time. I've left a bit of space open, where Virtual Earth suggests the helos park, since I might do a heli-overlay at some point. There are no parking codes, apart from a pair for the U28's from Hurlburt Field, as they'd otherwise take up the parking sports meant for the E-3's and E-6's.

I've also trimmed the apron areas, though if you have FREEflow Florida installed, there will be some areas hovering over water. Those areas are either closed or not used at all, so YMMV if it's a problem or not.

I haven't added any custom objects to it, it all comes from the default, so there shouldn't be any harm in opening it in ADE.

EDIT: Forgot to add, I've used radii to get a rough control of which aircraft goes where. If you've changed the default ones for the various MAIW traffic visiting Key West, double-check to make sure they'll still park.

D'oh, I made a terrible blunder which I've only just realised, I forgot to add a Hold Short node at a rather crucial point.

Edit: On the bright side, I found out why the western it appears to have been stretched. The default taxiway B joins up at the end of Runway 7's blastpad, whereas in real life, it joins up at the markers. Fixing it is going to be a bit of a headache, but I'll give it a shot.

A quick visual representation of how far off the Ramp was, compared to where it was supposed to be. Rebuilding it had the added effect of lining up just right with the FREEflow Florida coastlines and lakes/swamps/lagoons (whatever they are):

Have I mentioned how much I enjoy the Guide function in ADE?

I haven't found one single default airfield in FS9 or FSX with a correct scale. It's only become so obvious now that we're able to add a background image in AFX or ADE9X.

In the AFCAD days I would make the best of the default layout, but when I develop a new AFD now with ADE9 I simple delete everything except the ARP and the runway and start from scratch.

NQX is pretty much the first airport I've dealt with, that had anything other than a runway in place in the default setup. Which is why I haven't noticed it before :D
