US Navy C-26

Post by Joecoastie »

Four of the USN's C-26 Metroliners are based in Europe and provide rapid response cargo and passenger transportation.
All are unmarked and only carry a three digit tail number.

Here are the remaining three C-26's of the USN that are based at Barking Sands PMRF.
In contrast to the European based C-26's these carry markings.
920370 and 920371 in actuality have large electronics pods mounted underneath the fuselage,
being as there are no AI models of those A/C the Metro IV will have to do.
Will be uploaded to Avsim.

Uploaded to Avsim . . . should show up shortly. I've included a small flightplan so they'll show up.

 EDIT: For anyone who downloaded the C-26's, if you have solid prop textures, copy the prop texture from the "texture.4blade" to the Navy C-26 textures.
Or use the attached one below. Evidently something happened to the texture when I zipped it.

Many thanks, Joe.
One question, if I may, your readme mentions simple flightplans. Where can I find them?

JoeUSCG, thanks for the quick work on these from a small request to a mini-package. Just a question, are the DJC and DWAI models different?

The work that has been done on this subject epitomises what I love about MAIW.

From a small enquiry about a lost file, we have a new line of aircraft flying about our virtual skies.

Many, many thanks to Joe for all his work on this little project.

All the best

Darned if I know ! I don't have the DWAI one, but it looks like I'm going to have to find out. Enquiring minds want to know! And to think I almost started to look for other obscure planes to paint.

EDIT: Found and downloaded the DWAI Metro. The models are different. Couldn't find a paintkit for the DWAI. Looking at the the texture files the DJC Metro does have more detail (due to the layered paintkit). Did not add the DWAI Metro to a flight plan to see how it "performed".

EDIT #2: What started out as just painting four aircraft has now grown. Am now researching the lack of wing fences on the DJC Metro IV model.

From Wikipedia:
Improvements beyond the Metro III provided better systems, more power and a further increase in takeoff weight. This design effort resulted in the SA227 CC and SA227-DC models, initially called the Metro IV then renamed Metro 23, so named as they were designed for certification under FAR Part 23 (Amendment 34) standards.
C-26B - military version of the Metro III (Model SA227-BC) and Metro 23 (Model SA227-DC). Later C-26Bs were the military equivalent of the Metro 23 and the USAF took delivery of 37 examples. Some of these were transferred to the Peruvian Air Force and the US Army, while six were transferred to the US Navy as C-26Ds.

It appears I should have used the Metro III model for the Navy planes as even though the wing fence is in the paint kit, there is no fence on the IV model.
Pictures show most all of the military AC have the fences and some civilian AC of the same model do not. :?
If anyone is truly wanting the the wing fences send me a PM. I guess I can redo.

I uploaded them to Avsim the same time as the Pacific A/C, They said they got them, but I don't see them either.

Here they are. You may have to add some parking to PMDY if you happen to go there to wait for them.
Should you think Midway is a bit far, my 1991-1992 Jane's reports:

Range: C-26 with 1,315 kg (2900 lb) payload, 1,969 kg (4,342 lb) fuel, no reserves - 1,740 nm (3,223 km: 2,000mi)

I had to have them fly somewhere. :smt005

There's some scenery on AVSIM (dbwsimbarkingsands05.zip) for PMRF/Barking Sands, but sadly the AFCAD lacks parking spots for the metros.

He basically puts two parts of the required text files into one file and then also adds a callsign section.

What you need to do is to copy that one file somewhere and rename it to Aircraft_xxx.txt, where xxx is whatever you want the bgl to be called. Then copy that file and rename to FlightPlans_xxx,txt.

Now load the first text file up and delete the flightplan and callsign parts. make sure that you set the AC# to whatever you want. Save and load up up the Flightplans file. Delete the aircraft and callsign sections. Again alter the flightplan AC# to what you use din the Aircraft file.

Then download and install a proggy called Genair. Its purpose id to use your fill airports.txt file and create an Airports_xxx.txt file only using the airports that are used by the flightplan file.
Load the flightplan file into Genair and create the airports file. Then compile the bgl using the 4 files you have created,

Incidentally, you can alter the aircraft file as Joe has done 4 paints for you.

I installed it and there were NO parking spaces at all . . . . . so I added some with reference to Google Earth. I can't post the file as it is someone elses work, but send me a PM and I can send it to you. ( guess that's legal . . if not tell me).

It looks like we use the DJC one at MAIW
From what I remember Graham King said this was the better one (or maybe easier to paint)

Just want to verify that the repaints will work on the model used in all the MAIW packs, labeled MetroIII. Joe's paints are labeled MetroIV. Any renaming of texture files needed?

Re: US Navy C-26

The full explanation is as follows.
When Craig created his model set he had them using the same paint kit, so any one of the paints for one type, MetroII,III or IV, can be renamed to fit any of the others. What slightly confused the issue here is that the version used by the Navy, ex-USAF birds, are officially the Model SA227-DC model.
These were originally named Metro IV it was later renamed the Metro 23. So Joe used the MetroIV model. However there is a difference between the Metro 23 and the Metro IV, models SA227-AT and SA227-AT, The IV has no wing fences, whilst the III does.

The USN versions have the wing fences, so officially should use the III model already used in other MAIW series. As all the models use the same paint kit there isn't a problem, except that as he didn't know he needed them Joe removed the area used for he wing fences from the paints so if you use the III model then you will get bright blue wing fences.

This is what Joe was talking about. So if you want to use the same model as previous releases then you need to wait for Joe to add the wing fence area to the schemes. Hopefully this answers the questions.

I never knew how complicated the models for the Metroliner were until I looked into it.
