Model author contact information needed

Post by Gaiiden »

I've completed exporting static AI for my latest scenery release using SAMM. Now that all the static models are in place I know which ones I will be using for the final release and it's time to seek author permission to be able to distribute the model files with my scenery release. Due to the size of the model library I will most likely be hosting the file itself on my own server with a link for people to download in the scenery release ReadMe, as some people may just want to use MAIW movements - for which the airport I designed is fully compatible. You may wonder that I didn't ask permission before I went ahead and created the static models - the reasons are 1) I needed experience using SAMM regardless and 2) even if I can't distribute some or all I can still use them all myself.

I've been searching all over and can't find any straight way (email, preferably) to contact these model authors/groups:

Henry Tomkiewicz
Pascul Suls
Charles Dayhuff
Rysiek Winawer
Nick Black
Project AI
AI Aardvark
Chris "Elvis" Jones

I saw Nick Black's account on the forums but he hasn't signed in since the beginning of the month so not really feeling a PM is worthwhile. I dug all the author names out of the package ReadMe docs but they were just names, no contact info. Is there a place I can go to find this information? Couldn't locate it here on the site.

Appreciate the help, this is the only time I've had to include other's work directly in a scenery release...

Oh and in case it needs to be said - credit will of course be given in the ReadMe for all who allow their models to be used for static aircraft

Hello,
most of the authors you mentioned are users of this forum. Nick has quit some time ago as he is busy with real life. He sometimes logs in to greet us, but has no time for modelling, so somebody else took some of his projects over and eventually developed them into new models (Australian Hornets), so you'll definitely get a reply concerning his models as well.
As for Henry Tomkiewicz, I read somewhere that he has stopped modelling and somebody is already trying to contact him.

Pascal can be contacted here, his username is psuls.
Elvis left the building and the business.
Charles talks to very few people, I believe.
Rysiek can also be contacted here, RipPipPip, although he only drops occasionally these days, April was the last time.

I have to admit it's a bit annoying that it's difficult for me to find and contact these people. IMO if you release your work and leave a clause that allows your work to be used by a 3rd party with your permission you should also make sure you have a well-known point of contact for others to do so. There's not even author copyright information in the aircraft or model config files.

So am I effectively barred from using stuff from Elvis and others who are largely unreachable these days? Or would it be okay so long as they are credited properly? Obviously no one can really stop me from putting up the files anyway but I really have no desire to draw any ire out of the flight sim community in this regard either...

If you have modified copyright files and post them without the author's permission then the reputable libraries will take them down if requested on behalf of the author.

Modifying someones work without permission and then making the modified files available for all is not a good practise. Giving credit for the original author does not alter the copyright issue when permission is not in place.
Which way is up?

I'm pretty sure that the HTAI stuff comes with a blanket permission for use by third parties as long as it stays freeware. You shouldn't even need to contact him.
