Problem with AI KC135

Post by Christopher Low »

I have recently set up a few simple flights in the UK using the 100th ARW KC135 tanker. However, they are making ridiculous approaches to runways. Big, wide, slow S turns that result in them slamming into the ground at something like a 45 degree angle....in a field hundreds of yards to the side of the runway, and then turning and making their way across the meadows to the runway itself. What on Earth is going on here??

Strangely enough, a C17 Globemaster landed in a field short of the other end of the runway (minutes before the KC135 performed its record breaking and career destroying approach), and then just sat there doing nothing

I have not seen behaviour like this from any other AI plane to date, and I am baffled as to what is happening. Can anyone help? I have checked the flightplans (very simple "there and back" plans), and there is nothing wrong with them :?

What models are you using?

Just a thought Chris, are you using a Mildenhall AFCAD and do you just have the one live? If there's a duplicate it might confuse the sim and account for the behaviour?

Chris,

If you are using the PAI KC-135 from the original MAIW RAF Mildenhall package, my guess is that you have flight planned it to fly simple VFR flights. The PAI KC-135 is really only capable of flying IFR flights and does not fly VFR patterns very well because it tends to demonstrate behavior similar to what you describe. :(

I am pretty sure that I have set them up for IFR flights, but I will check. I also have the MAIW Mildenhall package installed (with KC135s and C130s active).

were you watching this traffic with some sort of AI Viewer? those have been know to cause some strange behavior with AI.

No, I loaded my plane at RAF Fairford in England at the appropriate time, and waited for the plane to appear. I slewed up to watch it, and it made these ridiculous slow, S turns on approach. In fact, the first time that I noticed this behaviour was at RAF Brize Norton. I had just parked my plane after landing, and noticed an AI plane on approach. However, it was swinging from left to right in the same kind of S turns (although less severe than those at RAF Fairford), landed on its right wing about a wingspan off the left side of the runway, skidded to the right, and then slowly moved towards the next taxiway exit (directly, rather than getting on the runway as quickly as possible).

A quick check has revealed that the RAF Brize Norton flightplan is IFR, but the RAF Fairford one is VFR. I have changed the latter, and I will see if it makes any difference.

You can add a taxi light effect by adding a line to the [Lights] section, however you have no way to control the effect since you are trying to use it on an AI model.
