Odd Problem -Textures Turning Black In FSX
Odd Problem -Textures Turning Black In FSX
Hello everyone,
I recently moved from FS9 to FSX with a hot new computer (AMD 3.6 Mhz) and video card (1 gig) and discovered an odd problem. Some of my MAIW aircraft turn black when I approach them. I'm using various aircraft, but the biggest problem seems to be with Tom's HTAI F-16. If there are four or five sitting together, one or two will be ok but the rest will be black. When I taxi past them and look back or go to outside view, the ones that were in full color are black too.
One thing I discovered, if I use the same texture for all of the same squadron aircraft, I don't have this problem. Only when I try to give each aircraft it's designated texture do I have the problem. I don't mind all of the AI aircraft to have the same paint scheme if I have to, but it takes away from the realism.
Any ideas?
Thanks,
Reggie

Really I am quite shocked this was not moved (exiled) to the FSX section already.
I think that question has come up actually - or maybe I am confusing it with something else. Might be worth posting in that section.

Reggie, common right now and I have yet to find an answer. Seems to be E and F models on my system, but it's intermittent on my system running a Nvidia card.
Making sure I save all my textures in DXT3, but FSRP has an option for DXT5???

I'm using one texture for all of the aircraft in the squadrons and it's working now. I'n not sure what the problem is. I'm having the same problem with the F/A-18 textures for VMFA-112 at KNFW, and the A-10C (v1) at KVPS, as well as the F-16 textures. Thanks for looking at the problem.

Hmm, ok the only texture issue I have had were with the NBAI Super Bugs. My tons of HTAI Vipers are fine in the sim. Make sure you have all the texture files for the RWAI A-10C's (I'm running the 2 "ET" test birds as well at VPS, no issues).

Re: Odd Problem -Textures Turning Black In FSX
Got everything working but the F-15D and F-15E. The canopy texture is part of the main texture. It is not a separate entity. I copied the F-15 textures into the main FSX "Texture" folder but it didn't help.
I'll keep working on it, hoping Nick Black will see this an offer some assistance.
Take care.......

Nick will not see your post.

Re: Odd Problem -Textures Turning Black In FSX
Have you tried inverting the alpha channel from white to black, making the little black box in the upper corner white. I haven't tested it on Nick's F-15's but normally that works for me. You may also like to turn the black box on the main texture sheet to white and see if that helps but test the alpha inverting first.

I tried all of that, it didn't work. See my addional post about weird black canopy situation.

What did you do to get the F-15 C models working?

Or maybe concentrate on the question why the F-15 have this issue on his setup at all. I have never seen it myself or heard it reported before.Ripcord wrote:What did you do to get the F-15 C models working?

Sure, I agree.gsnde wrote:Or maybe concentrate on the question why the F-15 have this issue on his setup at all. I have never seen it myself or heard it reported before.Ripcord wrote:What did you do to get the F-15 C models working?
And in order to do that, perhaps we could gain a few clues by finding out what he did, ON HIS SYSTEM where the problem exists, to get the C models working.
Right now I am going around to all my F-15 bases to see if I can find a similar problem.
Re: Odd Problem -Textures Turning Black In FSX
Reggie, what packages do you have installed? Eg, where are these problem units based?
Re: Odd Problem -Textures Turning Black In FSX
I have the F-15A at KJAX - 125th FW
The F-15C and D at KNBG - 159th FW
The F-15D and E at KVPS - 40th FTS (this is where the original screenshots were taken)
I took some more screenshots up close so maybe you can help me figure this out. You can view the screenshots at:
http://imgur.com/2iZnBvX,ng4eoTj,Y54KL8B
This is a safe image viewing website. VRS uses it to help people solve problems with the VRS Superbug so I know it is safe.
The first two screenshots are from the 125th. One is at a high angle to make the canopies black. The second is at a lower angle to show some of the canopies transparent when there is another aircraft behind them.
The third is at the 159th at KNBG. The photo tells the story.
Hey, in reviewing the screenshots where the canopies are transparent, I noticed that the ejection seat and dashpanel are still black. Am I missing a cockpit texture somewhere that's causing this problem?
Thanks guys!
Reggie

Re: Odd Problem -Textures Turning Black In FSX
Reggie,
I don't recognize those packages... Which ones are they? Are you sure they are Nick Black AI? Which Fighter Wing is JZ?
Particularly that one that has the blue lightning bolt, looks like it says FLORIDA on it. Number 0029, which is interesting because they are ALL 0029.
Ripcord
EDIT: OK, I think I found it. These are SE ANG units. That is a package that I do not yet have installed. Will install and report back.

Re: Odd Problem -Textures Turning Black In FSX
Reggie,
OK installed this package and it looks just fine, at least the A/B models at KJAX (Florida ANG).
Are you running Acceleration or SP2?

Re: Odd Problem -Textures Turning Black In FSX
I'm running Acceleration. I'm using the same texture for all of the aircraft in the squadrons because if I didn't, the entire aircraft turn black.
Appreciate you looking at this.

Re: Odd Problem -Textures Turning Black In FSX
OK good, then we know that is not the issue, since you are already have acceleration - which includes SP2.
The fact that you have several jets with the same tail number tells me something isn't right.
Did you install it to another folder and then cut / paste the items over into FSX? This is probably the better way to do this, since these are FS9 packages going into FSX.
Did you point the installer right at your FSX folder and do it that way?
Kinda thinking we might want to just remove this package and try again.

Re: Odd Problem -Textures Turning Black In FSX
Working along with you guys on this and checked my own system. All my SEANG F-15's are fine, and yes I have the full flightline with different tail #'s.
Looking at the ones giving me blacked out textures, for me it's one or 2 NBAI F-18E or F's. I rechecking them in FS Repainter.

Re: Odd Problem -Textures Turning Black In FSX
I just manually opened the packages and pull out the aircraft. The airbase scenery files draw down my FPS, so I don't use them. I also make my own afcads using AFX. I use the voicepack mods, changing them to "EVP" mods.
I manually install the aircraft that I need. To keep from getting too AI heavy, each squadron only has 6 - 8 aircraft. That keeps it pretty busy in the SE quadrant of the U.S. where I mostly fly. I live near NAS Pensacola, so my FSX starts me there and all of my squadrons are located in the area between Texas / Oklahoma east to Florida.
I found out through trial and error that some aircraft require all of the same texture or they turn black (entire aircraft). Some other forum members are having the same problem and used the same fix. They are trying to figure that problem out.
It's just the problem with the F-15's canopy that is bamboozling me.
I hope you find a fix. I think I'll delete and re-install the aircraft (manually) and see if that does something.
Cheers,
Reggie
