It does go against RAF policy in getting rid of the higher Sqn numbers for lower ones.

OK so the reason for the disbandment is now known.

17(R) Sqn will reform as the joint RAF/RN F-35 operational test squadron.

And 41(F) FJWOEU will get Typhoons (probably ex 17 Sqn machines)
