Requires the HTAI C-130H model.

While I have been away, two more C-130Rs have been delivered to the JMSDF, 9052 and 9053. Both are currently with 51 Kokutai at Atsugi.

It seems strange to have 1 in one sqn and two in another on the same base. Still I am sure it will sort itself out in due course.

Steve, been watching the Japanese Forces in the Scramble Monthly mag. They seem to be going through a massive reorganisation at the moment, with units and aircraft being moved around and withdrawn etc.

There is actually a pretty straightforward answer why one airframe is in 61 and the other two are in 51. 51 is the JMSDF test and development squadron. So the airframes that were first sent directly to Japan got tossed in there until the JMSDF can formalize their SOP for them. The C-130 is a whole new aircraft type for the JMSDF. The aircraft should begiven back to 61 when the rest of the airframes are delivered and 61 goes operational with them.

Interesting note: 9051 at Davis Monthan does not have the JMSDF titles on it that it's sister ships were delivered with.

That kinda makes sense. I just feel that normally they would all go to one test/workup unit initially and then be transferred to the operational unit when the SOPs/testing were complete. It would make sense to me if all 3 were on 51K.

Still there is no reason the JMSDF should have to think the same way I do.

My understanding is that the 61K staff that came over from the retired YS-11s are in Tucson with 9051, hence the 61K marking. Or were. There's some rumor that 9051 is in Japan now, but no confirmation yet. 9054 should be joining 9051 shortly where ever it is and is also marked for 61K. 9052 and 9053 never went to crew training but were delivered straight to Atsugi from being rebuilt, so they never flew with 61K crews. Honestly, I would expect to see 9052 and 9053 back in 61Ks hands before 9055 and 9056 are delivered.

The JASDF does. H models. These are the first for the JMSDF.

I was just shown a picture of 9052 with a 61K tail marking... so.. Yesterdays update is out of date already. Lol.
