This is a stupid question. Unbelievably, I can't find anything on the WWW explaining this. Maybe I'm not using the right search words.
But anyway, can someone tell me what "FU-***" on nearly all F-86's stands for? Is it "Fighter Unit"?
Just curious after all these years.

FU was the Buzz number prefix for the F-86 airframe. F for the type, Fighter. And U for the specific model, F-86. The F-100 had FW as it's prefix. The F-101 was FB. Here's the full list: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Buzz_number
