WW2 Airfields FSX/P3D

Post by tag21 »

RAF Ford was uploaded to MAIW in Jan 24 and the second airfield in the series is now ready for release.
RAF Friston was a grass airfield situated on the South Coast of the UK, near Eastbourne.
It was a fighter airfield, but because of its proximity to the enemy coast, it became a safe haven for many distressed bombers and fighters.
The package features models and AI Traffic by John Young and was researched by Tim Collins.

RAF Friston has now been uploaded.

It will be followed by RAF Bolt Head, which was a satellite for RAF Exeter, hosting various fighter squadrons. The clifftop site allowed fighters the maximum range for these sorties into France. Later, in the build up to D Day, Spitfires and Typhoons by day and Mosquitoes and Beaufighters by night, used the station for raids across the Channel.

RAF Bolt Head has now been uploaded.
The next airfield in the WW2 series will be RAF Hawkinge as it was in 1944.
RAF Hawkinge was the nearest Royal Air Force station to enemy-occupied France, with the Luftwaffe fighters, based in the Pas-de-Calais, being a mere 6 minutes flying time away.
Following the evacuation from Dunkirk, the first of several major Luftwaffe raids occurred on 12 August 1940 and caused a huge amount of damage to airfield buildings and the grass landing area. Among later attacks in fairly quick succession, one on 7 September directly hit the base headquarters as well as killing six people in the nearby village.
This did not deter the use of the airfield and aircraft from Hawkinge continued to make significant contributions to the war. Many fighter squadrons provided aerial support in the run up to the D-Day landings and afterwards. The main runway was also extended so that Hawkinge could act as an emergency landing ground for returning damaged RAF and USAAF bombers. Another prominent wartime duty was air-sea rescue with various types such as Westland Lysanders, Supermarine Walruses and Sea Otters using the airfield for a considerable period.

RAF Hawkinge has now been uploaded to MAIW.
The next group of airfields to be released in the WW2 series will be the Romney Marsh Advanced Landing Grounds. There were 5 ALG's built in this area to accommodate the ramp up of squadrons in preparation for D-Day. They also gave the Airfield Construction Groups much needed practice in how to rapidly build a temporary airfield for the push into France. The target was 1 to 3 days, but the norm was 4 to 10 days when conditions were unfavorable.
The first upload will include RAF Brenzett, RAF Newchurch and RAF Kingsnorth, to be followed by RAF Ashford and RAF Woodchurch.
Wing Commander Roland Beamont flew Tempests from RAF Newchurch to combat the V1 Flying Bomb threat and he managed to destroy 31 of them.
