It's a pretty busy place, probably nothing to compare with the big USAF transport bases, but for our puny little military forces it's busy. Parked on the airfield were the usual Tristars and VC10s, there were three C-17s this morning and four this afternoon. Both times two Polet An-124s were being loaded up. Nice to see so many big airframes.
We landed at Lyneham for a spot of lunch and a refuel and had a little chat with the groundcrew there. I remember Lyneham of old as being chock full of Hercules, but thses days there's hardly anybody there. Only five airframes on the serviceable line, the rest are all deployed on ops. In case anybody is interested in creating flightplans for EGDL, the boys there told me that they get an Airbus (they didn't know which model) and a DC-8 through there two or three times a week on cargo charters out to the 'Stan.
Lynehams's another busy little spot. Apart from my little chopper there was a HS-125, a Dominie and a Falcon 20 parked whilst a Royal Navy Jetsream and Merlin and an RAF Merlin were in the radar circuit. The same RAF Merlin was doing radar circuits at Brize later.
Makes me wish I could take a camera with me and enjoy some spotting rather than have to worry what nugget the boy wonder will come out with next to prematurely terminate our respective careers
