RAAF RATHMINES

Post by GZR_Sactargets »

An Aussie friend of mine sent me an item on RAAF Rathmines. It piqued my interest enough to hunt up some urls. Would be very nice for Catalina operations "down under." Some very historic events came out of there. I wasn't aware of the Australian "Black Cats" operations. Very similar to the US stuff of the same name.

An RAAF station was formed at Rathmines Australia, on 14 August 1939. Besides being the largest wartime flying boat base in Australia, it was also a training and repair base and a key communications centre. This aerial view of the Rathmines base shows the base facilities and and number of seaplanes moored in rows along the bay.

I'm not sure what you're saying. Are you asking about doing some scenery for that as a "historic" type package ?

Or is this in the wrong forum by mistake?

Just some data for someone who might take an interest in a historic package.

One of the main hangars is now used at RAAF Richmond to hangar the B707s. It used to hold Sunderlands but was a little low for the B707, so they made a jack to lift the nose so the B707 would fit under the door runner! It was recently re-clad in colorbond steel in lieu of the asbestos sheeting it had originally and the door was modified to fit the B707 (finally)!

I think many people would be greatly surprised what the Aussies get up too behind the head lines of the US forces. They may be a small team in comparison but are always requested by the U.S to do the hard yards.
You may not hear about them on CNN but they are there in the thick of it.
