Hello mate, pre 83 then! I was at WTM from 89 til handover to the AAC in 1993 so yes a little later.

Left in '84 after the Beirut experience. 74 hadn't been formed, but Nav assigned to the Sqn Boss was on 56 at the time, so he knew he was going there.

Barry Tichen was OC 56 in when I was there a nav by trade, followed by Barry Doggett near the end of the F-4 era. I did that avatar a while back as I thought it was quite apt!

So the HAS sites wouldn't have been finished when you were there then?

That's right we had the ASP to spread out on.
Never met Barry Tichen, but Barry Doggett was on the OCU when I was at CGY.
Brian Johnson was the CO on 56 when I joined, the name of the CO when I left was Geoff Brindle, he had a brother who flew P-3s for the USNR.

Well if I could make them out, then the 23 lineup would be very familiar as a large chunk of them were transfered to us. I don't recognise that particular 56 piccy, but it looks like Griggles third from the left in the front row. He was the NRL, now there is an old term

, before replacing Mike Bruce as OCA. Looks like BJ in the middle, and Sqwalcock, OCB, second from the right. I would probably recognise more on a bigger piccy.

Sorry about that, I've changed the filesize on photobucket so they'll be bigger now. if you click the photos above now, you'll be able to see the faces more clearly, though they are scans of old photos! I'd love to know where 56 were when that shot was taken.

I think its a great picture as it shows the various incarnations of the FGR.2 throughout it's service with the RAF, some have the RWR housings on top of the fin, others don't. I noticed that the second jet in has 111 Sqn markings on the nose too!

Interestingly the aircraft at the very back has the Barley grey air defence scheme, that's very probably XV474 as 56 Sqn had the first ever FGR.2 painted in the "new" scheme but with red and blue reduced roundels as you'll remember well I'm sure. That particular jet finished up on 74 Sqn as Wg Cdr Nick Spiller and F/L Sean O'Brien's jet, and is now at Duxford.

I had to do some work on that 23 Sqn pic as it actually had holes punched through it, thankfully not in any bad places though so I could repair it.

Yup, I'm about, lurking in the background! I can add a couple to the nostalgia trip from the good old days, although from the other side of the fence. Scans from 20 year old prints I'm afraid.

ZJ166 (the first) late last week on the overshoot - note the added decoration to the rear cockpit.

Yeah definitely looking forward to package of the Royal Army Air Corps package with the Apache!
Especially because I am now reading a book called "Apache Dawn" which is about 662 squadron's deployment to Afghanistan in 2007 a really superb book!
It's by Damien Lewis and it's very good!
Give's you a really inside look of how it to fly combat missions in a very hostile enviroment which is in this case Helmand province, Afghanistan!

I highly recommend this book!
