Typhoon Updates

Post by Firebird »

A very good article in Flight International this week on the German Typhoon Force.
Rather than pasting it in full here are the salient points for those interested and future package builders.

Neuberg
• Home of the first operational wing, JG74 (741/742 staffel)
• Current wing strength 10 a/c and 16 pilots
• Full wing strength will be 35 a/c and 53 pilots
• Full strength will take 2-3 years to achieve.
• 7 a/c destined for JG74 were diverted to Austria
• 14 of Tranche 1 total of 38 being upgraded to Block 5 standard
• 2x Block 8’s to arrive in November/December.
• JG74 expected to have 18-20 a/c by end of 2009.

QRA
• JG74 has been holding QRA duties since June
• All 10 JG74 a/c are required to fulfil QRA commitment of 2 armed plus 2 spares.
• Czech Gripens are currently available as emergency covered if required.
• Armament for QRA is 2x IRIS-T (HS), internal gun and centre line tank.

Useful Info
• German Typhoons do not have BVR missiles but plan to in the future, probably Meteor or AMRAAM.
• German Typhoons, Block 5 and above, do not have the PIRATE sensor. This matches the Austrian aircraft although the British, Italian and Spanish do. Although a FLIR option is being investigated for the future.
• German Typhoons receive AAR from German Tornados, although work is beginning on clearing the A310 to support the Typhoon.
• The next wing JBG31 is expected to receive its first aircraft in Dec 2009 at Norvenich, replacing Tornados. Followed by JG71 at Wittmund in 2011 replacing F-4Fs and finally JBG33 at Buchel in 2013 replacing Tornados

For Package managers this means that all German Typhoons will use Nicks T1 and F2 models for some years, no matter what Block number or Tranche there are from.

---===O===---

On a slightly different note the first aircraft from Tranche 2, a Block 8 single seat FGR4 aircraft has been handed over the the RAF on 10th Oct.

Unfortunatly replacing the F4's at the JG71 will take the remaining F4's from the German skies
