Not trying to dismiss the original posters thoughts, but we shouldn't assume anything. They very well could have been Syrian helo's.....

Special forces launch rare attack inside Syria

The countries bordering Iraq have had years to comply with requests to stop or help stop insurgents from entering the war zone. If they stall and/or do nothing then they risk this kind of action.
I have no doubt they knew that this could happen one day. Now they want to cry about it.

And still we don't know if this happened on Iraqi soil that Syria believes is theirs or the other way around.
