What's interesting is that in just the last couple of months, we've had two releases for FS2004, the VRS Superbug and the S8 F-86, that have completely redefined the world of freeware and payware addons.
What I'm noticing is that there seems to be this effort to pick a project and put 110% into the design and stick with it. Instead of a company that produces many models, the trend seems to be to pick just a few and really put all the bells and whistles into them. The number of hours of development put into just those two models alone is mind blowing. I think it really says something when a freeware model comes out that is far superior to the exact model that a payware company produces.
The F-86 model is interesting in that you now have several versions to choose from. Ironically the best two freeware versions rival if not surpass the payware versions. If I was a payware developer, I'd be a bit worried. Why would anyone just "give" that sort of thing away as freeware? I am extremely thankful that they have and can only hope that it will drive the payware developers to make their products even better.
The VRS model is something completely different. It hasn't even been out for two weeks yet so we don't really know yet what it is truely capable of. I managed to get it just last night and can see right off the bat that it is different than any other addon aircraft package that I've seen. The VRS model is more of a stand alone simulator that just happens to utilize FS2004 as it's platform for game play. Honestly it should be advertised as a stand alone F-18 simulator that requires you to have FS2004 as an addon to it.
So here we are, approaching 5 years since FS9 was released an it's still going strong. Certainly the developers have shifted their focus to FSX but there is still a strong FS9 following. That in itself seems to be a fundamental shift in the Flight Simulator series and its legacy.
Anyone know when/if FS11 will be released? I haven't even heard anything about it. I've read that the FS series may be getting close to reaching its peak of realism and graphical capabilities. Once that happens, what's next?

Well, if that were to happen I'm sure we'd be seeing an awful lot more Section F-86 and VRS Superbug quality items

Both the Section F-86 and VRS superbug are awesome models (still need to get the superbug) but the fact that the F-86 is freeware blows the Superbug out of the water imho. I never quite understood why modelers feel they need to make $$$ off their creations, MAIW is freeware and we certainly produce something that could very easily be payware and still have a huge demand in the FS world. To each his/her own I suppose....

Just my opinion but there isn't much of a market for payware military AI. The market for payware AI itself is not that big to begin with let alone this little segment. Like I said in another topic, if we went payware, it would be a job and no longer a hobby. That would take all the fun out of it for me at least. Plus I doubt it would even pay the bills.
I can certainly understand though if a developer wants to recoup some of their development hours in the form of cash. Can't blame them for trying to get paid for their efforts. But like you said there is now a new standard that will be expected from payware companies. I even see a couple of them going by the wayside because their work isn't even up to the freeware standards these days. Users have wised up and the payware folks will have to take notice.

MAIW Special Use Mentors Pack
The NAS Lemoore Scenery that comes with that pack is were I base 9 out of 10 of my flights in FS. It's in a perfect setting for any bird because its not in the middle of a heavily populated area so my FPS love it
If you want to fly into some hilly mountains just fly toward Fallon NAS or NAS North Island.... oh did I mention it is close to Fallon and North Island...
Two big long runways to handle just about anything from any direction. The overall quality of the scenery is damn good. Beyond my involvement with the SuperBug program, that scenery has transformed my FS experience quite significantly. Thanks MAIW and I can't wait to see what else you have in store for us in the future!!! Long Live MAIW

BTW, shameless self promotion here, but if there is a particular MAIW package from this past year that you really feel was outstanding or ground breaking, AVSIM is taking nominations for their Reader's Choice Awards for 2008. We received a nomination last year for the Airshow package but did not win. The awards will be presented at the 2009 FANCON in Dayton, Ohio (my home area) this year in September. I would love to represent MAIW back in my home area.

That was my point. Freeware has caught up and even surpassed payware in most respects. I disagree on the payment part though, it's a hobby, I wouldn't wanna get paid for keeping my frogs (my other hobby) and I definetly don't wanna be paid for my other AFCAD and KDMA work. It's something fun, asking for money makes it a (very poor paying) job and not as enjoyingJust my opinion but there isn't much of a market for payware military AI.
