There was a recent TV show that largely addressed the role China is playing in electronic manufacture and recycling. Not surprisingly, much of the work is done by hand. As a side bit, they showed large ship recycling in Bangladesh. Various types of ships, tankers, freighters, etc were being cut up with hand torches and the resulting steel slabs were moved by cranes and in some cases by hand. The sludge from the tanker bilges were just run into pits and then pumped into drums. The workers were wading around in the pits. Seems this would be almost as big a hazard as the asbestos on the Clemenceau.
