RAF Alconbury

Post by Fokket50 »

We are proud to present:

USAF RAF Alconbury circa 1990.

- 17th Reconnaissance Wing,
- 95th Reconnaissance Squadron (TR-1A/B, later designated U-2)

- 10th Tactical Fighter Wing
- 509th Tactical Fighter Squadron (A-10)
- 511th Tactical Fighter Squadron (A-10)

Included are repaints for all aircraft, Afcads for Alconbury (EGWZ)
and the two forward operating bases, Jever (ETNJ) and Ahlhorn (ETNA).
And weekly flightplans for all aircraft.

Special thanks go to Kevin Reed (Weescotty) for his generosity in allowing us the use of his TR-1A (U.2) paintkit. The code numbers were merely added to his completed textures.
Also thanks for his enhancements to the A-10 paintkit which gave such a realistic finish to the textures.

Now available at flightsim.com as EGWZ1990.ZIP.

Enjoy it,

Chris A Brown and Menno van den Boogaard

RF-4Cs, now that was when 'bury was interesting! Had those nice little Aggressor thingies as well.
I remember quite vividly when 111 sqn did some landscaping on finals there, the pics were quite famous at the time and made a spotter quite of bit of cash.

Wait for it! .... bloody awful  .

Yep thats the one. The spotter who got the pics showed remarkable quick thinking. He used up the film and put it in his sock and put a new roll of film in the camera. The MOD Police rolled up and confiscated all of his film, but didn't search him fully.
He then went and sold his pics to the media, so they had no choice but to give him his film back which I believe they had very thoughtfully processed.

Of course today the bloomin' things would be on the web before the Police vehicle would have been able to screech to a halt. There's progress for you.

Steve,

You can't beat the old ones !

Actually I didn't know the account of the roll of film. Quick thinking indeed on the spotters part as I believe the MOD Police have the power to seize the film as 'evidence' of an air accident. The cause, if I remember correctly, was faultly fastenings on the radome. Secured pre-flight but loosened during flight.
Like you say nowadays it would be around the world before the aircrew floated back to earth.

Veering slightly back on topic, I think that this package will look lovely with the ACG scenery when its ready, but me I still remember seeing the RFs from the train on my way to and from Coninsgby.

No doubt somebody will come up with a package that utilizes Nick's RFs, although we do need that pesky F-5 to put in an appearance as well.

At least the RF paints are already done, thank you Mark Walsh...totally agree that it will be good to add the F-5's too.........

Still have very fond memories of the Alconbury airshows............Those were the days....
