Holloman F-22 Update

Post by GZR_Sactargets »

From AF Daily Report 2 Jul 09

Building the Association: Air Force Reserve Command expects to stand up the 44th Fighter Group at Holloman AFB, N.M., by next January to work side-by-side with Holloman's active duty 49th Fighter Wing under a classic association to operate and sustain the 40 F-22 fighters that call Holloman home. The Reservists are currently operating at Holloman under the 301st Fighter Group, Det. 1. That group is a tenant of the 16th FW at NAS JRB Fort Worth-Carswell Field, Tex. Its members are moving to Holloman, along with airmen from AFRC's 301st Fighter Squadron at Luke AFB, Ariz., to constitute the 44th FG. The group will have about 130 full-time Reservists and 330 personnel when at full strength, including F-22 pilots, maintenance and medical personnel, and support administrative staff. "We are picking up eight to 10 people a month," said Col. Donald Lindberg, 301st FW, Det. 1 commander. (Holloman report by SrA. Rachel Kocin)

Anyone know what will happen to the T-38s based at Holloman that the old Nighthawk squadrons used to fly for currency?? Or are they already gone? Mark (djnocturnal) would know I bet.

they are all still here and flying, pass them on the way to work everyday :) i've heard nothing about them leaving but will ask around.

We almost have a full squadron of 22's now, should be full by Oct-Nov.

I've seen pics of the -38's with F-22's painted on the tails in place of the F-117's. Makes sense I guess, cheaper to operate and you can keep 2 guys current at one time.

For a time, I would agree. However it also runs the hours out quicker, between overhauls and of course aircraft life.
Whilst this may not seem like a big deal now, how are you going to get replacements in 10+ years time, as modern combat aircraft are now expected to last 25+ years.

I don't think that this part of the equation has been thoroughly researched.
