Some of the a/c from MS Combat Flight Simulator do pretty good as AI. They are multi-LOD but a little heavy close-up.

I know Jake, I use most of them around my skies, but unfortunately, B-17 is not one of the default AC coming with CFS2.There are only the Liberator and B-25.
