Cargo Aircraft in Haiti

Post by MIKE JG »

It's hard not to be glued to the TV watching all the reporting coming out of Haiti. My heart certainly goes out to anyone who has been affected by this disaster. I can't help but notice the variety of aircraft that you occasionally see in the background at the airport in the news reports. I just saw the Qatari painted C-17 down there of all things. Beyond that, pretty much anything and everything that can haul a box has been in there so far save for the largest transporters. It's certainly nice to see all the various nations represented coming together to help out.

Did anyone see the C-141 on TV on the ramp in Haiti? I thought all of those were retired? Was in USAF markings. Also some Army General wanted them to find a straight stretch of road and build a tactical air strip so C-130s and C-17s could operate from it. Says that is why we built them for. Be fun watching a C-17 land on a road, but I hope they have a big parking lot to put it after it gets there.

Notice they're not sending any C-5's. Those things would just break down and clog up the whole airport.

Nah, Its not a good layover. They will take back off and land at key west or somplace else that is nice. During Restore Hope a C-5 never broke down it was a drop and go.

Just read that Mr. Travolta himself piloted his Qantas a/c to the scene filled up with food.

The other day I helped load a Citation X with medical supplies. Never seen so many boxes fill up a cabin so quick.
