Hi I lived on the Bentwaters flightpath for many years (from the days when Super Sabres were there) I remember when the F-4's arrived I even got to sit in one :) I may have some pics for you somewhere. They were the 81st TFW, From memory codes were 78th FS WR, 91st FS WT, 92nd WS, I'm sure the ones at Woodbridge were later coded WB ,but I may be wrong, it's an age thing LOL :) Tail codes were painted White over the standard SEA cammo plus each Sqn had a tail flash coloured either red blue or yellow. I can remember that they mostly carried 4x Sparrow missiles underbelly, Wing tanks 2-4 Sidewinders and either a centreline fuel tank or gunpod which i think was a converted centreline tank with a vulcan gun placed inside. This was how you would generally see them.

Thanks for the info.....I was reading about the F-4's at Bentwaters & my source states the following:
In 1972, squadron tail codes were abolished, and a standard "WR" was used for all aircraft assigned to the 81st TFW.
Can someone confirm or deny this?

I'll take any information, photos or help....

In 1971, the 78th flew F-4Ds coded WR, the 91st flew F-4Cs coded WS and the 92nd flew F-4Cs coded WT. In '72 the wing code became WR and '73 the 91st and 92nd converted to F-4Ds.

At Ramstein the 512th TFS had F-4Es in 1977, yellow, with tail code of RS. The 526th were red.

In '69 the 36TFW had 4 sqns of F-4s.
22nd TFS, BR, F-4D, Bitburg
23rd TFS, BS, F-4D, Spandahlem
53rd TFS, BT, F-4D, Bitburg
525th TFS, BU, F-4E, Bitburg.

At the end of '71 the 23rd moved to the 52nd TFW.
In '72 the code of the 3 remaining sqns became BT.
In '72-'73 the 22nd and 53rd converted to the F-4E.
The 525th never had the F-4D, they converted from the F-102.
