Look at the difference in the exhaust nozzles in the pictures as it's going down. The left one is wide open and the right one is squeezed down most if not all the way. Me thinks he might have had an engine failure or compressor stall on the right engine and that's all it would take at that altitude and speed.

Good shots indeed and glad to see the pilot escapin the scene.
Just one question on the F-18 engines: does the nozzle close when engine shuts down? Looks a bit different to me. Worked on the Tornado some years. IIRC nozzle stayed in dry mode in same position always. Only opened when taxi mode was engaged or reheat (afterburner) was applied. Or does my memory fail here? (Its over ten years ago since I touched a Tornado last time
)
