I open up the original bmp in photoshop and begin recreating a new psd for it by making panel lines, rivets etc...when I'm done I throw on a layer of dirt and maybe some fading with the airbrush.
I've been using DXTBmp.exe. I open the F16D_01_T.dds in DXTBmp, then send it to editor (PSP7). Once I complete the edits I save it and send it back to DXTBmp where I save it again as a DDS 888-8 32 bit. Then when I go to start up FSX it crashes. I am stumped.

hmmm...sounds like you have it down right. I am stumped as well. The only thing I can think of would be that maybe something isn't named correctly. I am not too familiar with the DDS format so it could also be something with that.
That F-16 from Iris didn't come with a paintkit?
I'm liking your paint Mark. It's a 1940's paint on VX30's S3B used for range clearance duties out of Pt Mugu. There is also an S3 used for range duties out of Hawaii. Together with the Nasa bird, I think they are the only 3 flying.
Showing VX-30 to have 3 Vikings for range work, and NASA has one. One can probably get away these on the old Rick S. model (non-AI), pending system specs.
