Japanes Earthquake - military consequences?

Post by james84 »

I've been following this big drama throughout the day. The images speak on their own, it's just terrific. I think the Tsunami has caused more damage than the quake itself. Any info on the the consequences on the military bases in the area involved?
I read that Yokota has received some diversion from Narita, included a United-Continental 747. Misawa is just in the area struck by the quake and not far from the sea. Any info on the situation in other bases?

Just heard that all US bases are undamaged and all US personnel in the region are safe.

I would imagine that the JSDF's have been affected.

Definitely, I think there have been trouble especially for the Japanese Navy bases.

The bigger issue right now is the 5 nuclear power plants that went off line during the quake. One of them suffered an explosion today and that CAN'T be a good thing at a nuclear power plant.

This seems to be getting very little attention in the media......

Maybe in the States, but here it's the headline.

We still remember Chernobyl where the fallout headed in our direction. :?

From Repubblica.it
These photos have been taken in the city of Miyagi, which has been literally washed away by the tsunami.
I think this is one of Matsushima's aircrafts.

This quake is stretching us military resources. The whole 7thfleet has been directed towards japan. If the us wants to impose an no fly zone over Libya, it's going to have some consequences.

Hmmm... they could rely on the aircrafts based in Europe in order to impose the no-fly zone, and I think the time has come as the soldiers loyal to Qaddafi are fighting back.

The US 7th Fleet is homeported out of Japan. The US is sending another carrier to help with the relief efforts. This is hardly stretching the Navy's resources.

As far as Libya is concerned a no fly zone will be a NATO operation not a US led one.

Well, the USAF have aircrafts at Aviano, Spangdahlem and Lakenheath, and the Italian Govt. has offered its airports for the operations..

Training squadron may be gone
It's the Squadron based at Matsushima, they only have F-2B. The aircraft in the photo I posted belongs to that squadron.
Also, I just read that the crew aboard USS Reagan has been exposed to radiations and absorbed in an hour the amount of radiation that are usually absorbed within a month.

The crew that was exposed was from 3 three helos not the USS Reagan itself.

Just a thought but does that mean that the JASDF will buy more F-2s to replace those lost? They may do it just to preserve the workforce and keep the talent until the ATD-X program (the japanese stealth fighter program) goes into production?
