The military was flying 1,500 civilian critical care patients from Louisiana and Texas to safer locations over the weekend. Some 16,000 other civilians could be flown from New Orleans to Dallas-Fort Worth, according to U.S. Northern Command, based in Colorado.

Edited to add:
As of 5:30am CDT, my neice says that there are major "discussions" (read that as arguments) within the NWS and NHC concerning Gustav and the official/publicly released forecast. Politics has certainly entered the mix - if officials stage a repeat of Katrina-level response and the damage is bad, they're screwed. If officials do not get people out "early" or Gustav ends up going "elsewhere" and the evacuation causes too much of a "hardship" for those who did evacuate, then they (the politicians) are screwed. It's a no win situation for the NWS/NHC. Despite what anyone thinks, the official forecasts are not based solely on "science"; regardless, the predictive models have significant room for error.
That said, the neice is staying in the area of Slidell hoping for the best. Personally, I'm riding it out on the East Bank area of Jefferson Parish with my elderly Dad who refuses to leave. I don't have much of a choice as I can't leave him here alone.

Mayor Nagin has issued a dusk to dawn curfew for New Orleans
KMOB runways close at 10 pm tonight, open at 10 am Tuesday
Bankhead Tunnel in Mobile, Alabama closed until weather conditions improve. National Guard troop force in New Orleans doubled to prevent looting. If law enforcement and the guard catches looters, THEY WILL BE SENT TO ANGOLA, THE STATE PRISON.
And,If the hurricane pivots to the right and aims for the Central MS coast, or Alabama, I'm screwed becuase I don't have time to escape.
Fellow MAIW members let us pray for the safety of Ford tonight and his loved ones who are riding out the storm in Louisiana. Always pray until the weather conditions improve in New Orleans where he is living.
right now the town's being filled up with evacuees. I saw some today. Feel totally so sorry for them

Save your prayers wrt me. I made an informed decision to stay based on my values and information provided by my neice, the meteorlogist .
That said, Gustav isn't "the big one" as far as strength, breadth or whatever - yet. I'll wait to evaluate it until it actually hits.
But you can keep your fingers crossed if you want.

Gustav was a BITCH.......from what I am being told by sources, the real damage caused by Gustav wasnt really reported by the national media. I cannot attest to this because, well, I JUST got power back. Houma and Baton Rouge took the hardest hits it appears. I live in Baton Rouge. Here is my story. Woke up around 7 a.m. Monday morning to light rain and breezy winds. By 11 a.m. we had tropical storm force winds. At 12:15 p.m., I lost power. Starting around 2 p.m. Baton Rouge started having Hurricane force winds of 93 mph and gusts to 121 mph. I can tell you, this being my 9 hurricane I have went through, to me, this was the worst. I lost the back side of my roof, my entire privacy fence, 3 trees UPROOTED, my patio is half gone, and three shattered windows to include a sliding glass door. I have spent the past 4 days without power in 95 degree temps with a humidity of 97 percent. To sum that up, IT SUCKS. To top that off, I have been tarping my roof with the world famous FEMA blue tarps. Cutting up trees and battling lines at the gas station to get a limited supply of gas. Here in East Baton Rouge parish, 179,000 meters were without of power. Some parts of the parish are not and will not be back online with power for 21 days. The parish below us has areas that will not be powered until Oct. The reason alot of people do not know this is because we ARE NOT New Orleans. New Orleans made it is all I have actually heard that was really reported on the national media. Thats BS. We have the FEMA centers here in Baton Rouge, thousands of people come everyday to get fresh ice, water, MREs, tarps........anything to make life a little easier. In closing, I will say this. I was actually LUCKY. My family is safe, without a scratch. Yes, FEMA and my home owners insurance (thank god I have full coverage) will be lucky. But I am not as bad off as some......we did have 10 deaths here in Baton Rouge from the hurricane. And now.....was have over a 50% chance that we are gonna get Ike.......F**K IKE!!!! Bring him on.....I just lived through and still going through it....the WORST HURRICANE in Baton Rouge history......the second worst for Baton ROuge wasnt Katrina.....it was Hurricane Betsy back in the 1950's................................I am back now, although limited for the next week or two until internet gets back to normal.......

winsman.. I feel for you man. I was a kid when Hurricane Betsy came through Baton Rouge. I lived in Sherwood Forest subdivison and we were without power for a week, no water for 10 days think. I was in Tigertown for Katrina - no power then for 3 days. As you said, it sucks.
I didn't have quite the clean up this time that you have had, but the New Orleans 'burbs weren't completely spared. We lost 1/2 of two trees in my yard too - an oak and an elm.
Hang in there. It seems like Jindal has a much better handle on things than Blanco did. His boot seems to be up Entergy's behind already!
Edited to add: Just saw on the Advocate (newspaper) webstie that the Sherwood Forest/Broadmoor area isn't expected to get power back for 14-21 days.
