Really nice work !!
Thank's for mentioning you do LOD's for scenery objects . That's something I never even considered .
Back to the drawing board (AGAIN ) BTW: Just finished me own 3 views of the 101 .so that'll be moving SSSLLLOOOWWWWLLLLLY fwd. again .
Yeap, level of detail models are the way forward for me. No more simple ugly box models that rely soley on textures to trick the eye. I also found that is quicker to make a lod model than to frig around with the textures making shadows and highlights everywhere. Like I still add those effects but just not as much.
One thing I use to hate were jagging edges around the gutters and gabbles that ever peresent because of tiny low res drawings on the texture sheet, now I feel happy to give a single model a whole 1024p sheet to it self if need be.
I have no impact from the old models to new models on my eight year old single core PC and zero impact on my gaming PC running it on FSX with three screens operating so I'm happy with how its turning out.
Just got so many models to make and remake for this base, including some new toys and eye candy stuff.
Going to be a while but I'm not rushing it as I'm not spending as much time doing the hobby as I did before with making AI.
I really can't see me ever going back to making flight aircraft ever again, this much more rewarding and easier to put down and come back too at a later time.
Sorry, to all those people who have emailed and PMed me about making them models for there projects or helping with textures, etc. Australia has become one of the worst developed nations in the FS world for good military base scenery, so I'm going to spend a bit of time making my part of the world more interesting for me to fly in and that going to take a fair bit time to get around the bases.
cheer's,
I know that they always look better in the sim but they do look very nice indeed.
Steve,
Not too bad considering the low res material that I have to work from. It's not like you can wonder around Amberley with a camera in hand taking snap shots, lol
Still some more work to do to this model around the windows and such. I know it lloks like a bunch of small window but they are in fact sun visors bolted on to the front of the building, so I will model those in and use lods to make them FS friendly.
Almost got the KC-30A Customs Terminal in the bag. Took a bit to make the textures up for this model as I only had low res photos to work from. I think it came out OK. It has three lods and also tweaked.
cheer's,
That's the KC-30A ramp buildings done and dusted. Heaps more to do elsewhere including new area background buildings, etc.
Going to take a while to complete this project but there's no rush.
For the few of you that have an interest in the upcoming YAMB, here is the old TAE building where they use to service and rebuild the F1-11 jet engines, now I guess they will work with boeing on the Super Hornet engines.
The building it self is very old but when they needed a larger facility , rather than knock the old building down, they simply built a new alloy hanger right in the middle of it. Inside this building, the old timber stairs and walkways are still being used. It's a real step back in time. Let me know what you think of these models.
Back to the sweat shop after a few weeks abroad. Custom models are about 30% done, so still a ways to go. Don't know the actual count but its probably around 50-60 more to go. Thankfully the back ground models are simpler to make and many can be reused.
These are library models so don't expect the same perforance of the ACG sceneries but so far it's looking good using my old single core Dell as a test machine.
Comments or questions welcome!
Thanks Steve.
The photo that I took of this hangar was a few years old and was dark around the edges with some clutter inside, namely an F1-11 so I remade the entire texture by hand. Still some more work to do on the outside skin but its not an easy one as there are lots of pipes and tubes everywhere and I'm still a bit concerned about over board with too much detail.
I think it came out rather good considering.
I'm still not sure just how far I can go, polygon wise on these models, even though I am using lods. One of my models, I think it's the Climate Control Hangar going by memory has five lods.
This model pictured above will hopefully be tweaked in a daylight and night model, the difference being on night fall, the doors will appear closed. Not the first time that's been done I'm sure, but it adds a bit more realism to the scenery.
It's not looking like Christmas release, so much still to do including the development of some new toys.

I agree!!

I actually had the blank model finished a couple of weeks ago but I went Jetsetting again so that slowed everthing down. The textures of the hangar above were actually made on my laptop at 38,000ft in a Flying Kangaroo A380 on the way back home. There's a worthless tidbit for you that comes free of charge, lol.
On with the show!
