RAF Machrihanish

Post by delbydoo »

Another goody from Brian Clarke. This time, it's not actually an active base - Machrihanish (Campbeltown) was a NATO base primarily used as a staging post for US military transatlantic flights and the odd P-3. It's ideal for testing those secret AI projects as well!

Enjoy.

Oh yeah. Not saying that it happened often but the weather could get a bit temperamental up there and a couple of times, that I know of, fish were found on the runway on the morning inspection.

In a hanger?

The most interesting rumour, a strong one, was that project Aurora flew from QJ. Transported there in a C-5, pre-flighted, took off over Northern Europe and back. Rolled back onto the C-5 and away back to the US. All in one Night.

Whether or not Aurora existed, flew or not, or was ever at QJ is for debate but it is a cool rumour.

Isn't there a golf course right next to the runway? If it is, it has blown any Black Projects flying from there!
