Here is the story;
U.S. military plane crashes near Kazakh-Kyrgyz border - ministry
Fri May 3, 2013 12:06pm BST

BISHKEK (Reuters) - A U.S. military transport plane carrying fuel crashed on Friday near the border between Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan, an official from Kyrgyzstan's Emergencies Minister said.

"(The plane) caught fire in the air and crashed," the official said.

The plane disappeared from radar near the Kyrgyz village of Chaldovar, 90 km (55 miles) from the U.S. airforce base at Manas in Kyrgyzstan, which U.S. forces maintain for operations in Afghanistan.

Confirmed, KC-135. Having been in and out of Manas, nothing but tankers and cargo there.

Pictures from scene show aircraft as being from 22nd ARW at McConnell (Tail ID 38877).

Damned shame - condolences to all concerned.

There's a picture in this thread that pretty much sums it up, three pieces all hitting the ground at the same time.

Seems to corroborate an eye witness report of the aircraft on fire and then exploding into three pieces. :(

It's been a crappy week......

Discussion on an AF forum I'm on, AMC removed all parachutes in order to get more fuel onboard, not that it would've helped in this accident.
