Help With Converting FSX Aircraft to P3D4.5

Post by Kelleymoe »

Well, after purchasing P3D4.5 several years ago, I have decided to transition from FSX to P3D. So far, I have had only minimal issues with FSX scenery and was able to fix the problem by searching the MAIW Forum. The problem I haven't been able to figure out, and hope someone can mentor me, is the afterburner issue with FSX aircraft in P3D4.5. I have installed the "ACG_Wattisham_AI_Phantoms_FSX_1" aircraft, but on take-off, the afterburner looks like a very bright vertical halo around the tail section. What's strange is I only see it if I am looking at it from the front. If I am on the side next to the F-4, it looks just fine.

Is there a setting(s) I need to change in the Aircraft.cfg file? Or, is there something else I need to do?

I should have made this P3D4.5 change when Matrix was active. This would have made things easier.

Thank you for your help.

Hi Mike,

Welcome to the P3D club  Long story short the lights section in the cfg don't work particularly well, the afterburner effect you're describing is exactly what happens to any light entries in the [Lights] section of the cfg file.

What needs to happen is the lights need to be embedded into the model itself, that way the lights will appear correctly in the sim. This can be done in MCX & this includes the afterburner as well, albeit with a little trickery as well.

Hope this helps.

Thank you, Dan, for the explanation. I didn't realize it was that complicated. So far, almost all the FSX files I've installed looks really good in the P3D. I can still enjoy the Phantoms around Wattisham. The one other issue I'm investigating is the shine on the canopies. They're still transparent (at the right angle) but are really shinny. I'm going to check the sim for a reflection setting. If there's one, I'll uncheck it and see if that makes a difference.

Take care,

Mike

Mike, the reheat visualisation isn't a simple conversion (as Dan explains) but the reflectivity of textures is simply altered within MCX. The best method I've found is to find a texture that you do like in another aircraft and apply those settings to the aircraft you don't like. To find the settings you'll need to identify the texture being used (use 'highlight' in the MCX window and look for your cockpit glass to turn a shade of red as you try each texture in turn). Turning global reflectivity off in the sim will affect everything, and is a bit of a sledgehammer approach!

Which version of the F-4 are you using? You may find that the NMAI conversions done by MAIW in 2018 may be more successful for you.
